Over the years, I have tried to be interested in football, but it just doesn't grab me. That's where I am. Can be vaguely engaged like when I was lad in Leeds and Leeds United were in their pomp. Watched them leave Leeds Bradford Airport for the European Cup final in 1975 but frankly getting the brand new Aer Lingus 737 EI-ASL taking them out as a plane spotter 'cop' was worth more than brushing shoulders with Billy Bremner. The 1990 and 2018 world cups were a wee bit engaging but not enough for Mrs B and I to be at Brompton Junction in Covent Garden looking for her 'B' during the Sweden match. My son OTOH was an enthusiastic but unskilled player at Primary age where one of the short haired crew in various team shirts turned out to be a girl - you'd not make that mistake if you saw her now. He's given up kickabouts but is a very enthusiastic supporter of his now home team -Liverpool. Were England or Wales, my daughter is married to a Welshman and lives in Flintshire, to prgress I met start watching on TV. Otherwise my sport watching will be the usual - Tour de France

Speaking of girls hiding in boys' teams, I have a female cousin in Canada who used to play in goal for a men's ice hockey team. Her favourite part was taking off the mask at the end of the match to reveal her identity to the opposition. Generally met with horror by the lads who were terrified they'd roughed her up too much, but she didn't give a monkey's.

I guess my main failing is not having an attention span long enough to watch a whole game of anything really. I find myself wandering off, missing chunks of it or simply falling asleep.
If I'm not actually doing something myself my brain just shuts down, can't sit for long watching anything without losing interest.
Which is a bit of a problem in cinemas, I'm the one in front of you, snoring.

I knew this would happen eventually. Fantastic entertainment between Switzerland and France. This is more like it!

I usually write the Swiss off as boring and bound to lose against any team with a degree of flair. Going to have to reassess that prejudice now. I have the same prejudice against Ukraine and Sweden, let's hope that one gets binned as well.

Will we get an amusing colour clash between Sweden and Ukraine?

It occurred to me yesterday during the decisive phase of the Switzerland match that there’s an imbalance in the concept of the penalty shootout. The format requires people to take penalty kicks when that’s not what they’re in the side to do, and to do so one at a time. But they all face the same opponent, who is doing exactly the job he was picked to do.
So wouldn’t it be fairer to make the players take turns in goal too? Once you’ve taken your kick, you take the gloves for the next one. A better test of all-round ability, wouldn’t you say?

Ah well no, there's a clear advantage to the penalty taker whoever it is, it's far easier even for the lesser skilled striker of a football to score, than it is for the goalkeeper to save.

It was a wonderful evening of football yesterday. Exciting, pulsating end to end stuff. The reason we watch.
Not sure today's will be as good...

I am expecting England to play not to lose, and try to nick a goal from a set piece. If they break the habits of a lifetime and bomb forward they'll be picked off by ze Germans. Still think the match could go either way but like you say I'm not expecting anything like yesterday's games. Ai I implied I imagine the other match will be the better spectacle, despite my long held prejudices about both teams being dull.

Well Al, how was it?! I didn’t get up at 4am here to watch live.
I note that in a previous post you feared the Dutch side... oops. And you think that Sweden might be a threat... oops again! 🤣
