Over the years, I have tried to be interested in football, but it just doesn't grab me. I went to the gym and for a swim last night while the games were on. It was great, more or less had the place to myself. Gradually getting some semblance of personal fitness back. I've never felt quite as lived in as during the past year and a bit.
Back to "normal" belt settings now anyway!

Sorry, Humph and Vić but it was probably a bit much to hope to progress by beating the World Cup finalists. Quite impressive to hear the sound in the stadium, though — and I don’t mean Flower of Scotland, which remains an offence against music. But I did like the support for the team, right to the final whistle; can’t help contrasting it with what an England team might have got in the same situation. It made the chauvinistic inanities of the Scottish bloke in the ITV commentary team more bearable. Bad luck then, Scotland. But thanks for having better fans than England. Cheers, Dubya. Agreed on Flower, we should use Scotland the Brave again. But Ally McCoist seems a fair and reasonably non-partisan commentator to me. Contrasted with Robbie Savage for example when he's on a Wales match it's night and day. McCoist is generous and complimentary to the opposition and appreciates the game for what it is, whichever side deserves praise at any time. IMHO.

McCoist, is that who it was? He did praise Croatia’s goals in the second half (I didn’t watch the first) but I do find it wearing to hear commentators constantly referring to one of the teams as ‘we’.
Guess we won’t hear him do that for a while. 🥲

Plenty of the English pundits/commentators use the "we" also. McCoist played loads of times for Scotland, I don't think it's unusual he should use "we". It's less jarring when used for national teams than club teams I think.
I'm looking forward to our (should I say "Scotland's"?) next major tournament, should be Euro 2044 going on current rates of qualification...

Not really Al, Scotland fans have the choice of 15 teams to shout for in the last 16.

Some, maybe. I don't take that road. Would like to see England and Wales progress now. Wish we could have taken the Croats out with us, not much time for them these days.

That's two hours we can get back next Tuesday. Toss a coin, decide which goal to use, straight to penalties. Should be done and dusted in less than 20 minutes.

Great entertainment last night. During the games as the goals went in, Portugal managed to be sitting in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Like watching a fruit machine spin. Poor old Magyarország in the end though.
I do get the horrible feeling that the Eng v Ger game will be turgid, try-not-to-lose as bpg says. Still, whichever of those two wins, they are perhaps favourites to reach the final looking at the draw. All the other big sides are in the other half. Ridiculous, really. There are always a couple of dull non-entities who make it through to these stages and then the quarter finals - Sweden and Ukraine in this case. One of those will play England or Germany. I suppose the Netherlands are the danger team in that part of the draw thinking about it, perhaps they will make it to the final now, but with England they can cock it up against anyone.
Now the dreaded hiatus of 2 days with no matches. Gnnnn.

Last night was the best night of football for a while. It showed the potential for excitement that is better seen in club football - and especially attacking teams like ManCity or Liverpool.
England are so worried about losing at times that even players who can and do play a lot better for their clubs, become more conservative. Shame really as we do have a good team capable of beating the best on the day. The England team contains enough players from ManCity/Liverpool/Chelsea who between them have won enough silverware that playing Germany or anyone else should be of little worry.

Reading that am I correct in thinking the management and the tactics are wrong ? You're saying the England squad is the equivalent of the best car on a F1 grid and it's being piloted by James May.

That's almost a reasonable comparison but perhaps not quite.
Gareth Southgate is a decent manager who gets 90% out of his players but needs to get more out of them now we are in the knock-out stages. It is game management for the mini-league stage that ended last night. Making sure that overall we qualify for knockout. Preserving the best players for when they really need to go for it. All managers do that. If ManCity played what I felt was their best team every match, we would win very little, as you need to rotate players for match fitness, cope with injuries and bring new ones on and gradually let older ones retire gracefully. So Southgate has done his job to date very well. He needs to up his game from B+ to A*. He can do it.
So, perhaps as a team England are not the very very best, but contains enough world class players that playing another of the quality teams should not be a worry. I am not worried about Germany in strict quality terms. But as Lineker once said "football is a game of 90 minutes played by two teams and Germany win". If we beat Germany the remaining teams in our half of the draw hold no worries whatsoever. We should be in the final. The teams who do worry me are Belgium, simply because they have some really superb players, France who can play very well and also have some truly outstanding players but appear sometimes to be a team of individuals, and Spain who have done it before several times. But ManCity beat PSG easily in Champions League over two legs and PSG form the bulk of the France team.
It is in the lap of the gods. If we play to our strengths, we should beat Germany and go on to reach the final. You did not hear it here first... I am merely a hopeful spectator drinking beer in the den watching a TV.

Netherlands. Netherlands are your problem if you beat the Germans. That and England always managing to achieve a stupid defeat against a non-team, on this occasion I'd be worried about Sweden.

Don't forget in the Premier League very few teams can live with a Man City team when they are on it, CL final and they lose to Chelsea.

Now - that was the fault of the manager. Stupid team selection; no holding mid-fielder (Fernadinho or Rodri) so we were vulnerable to the break which lead to the only goal of the match. Once Ferna came on, we got more stuck in and were getting cloer to scoring but there wasn't enough time.
BUt yes, any team can fall unexpectedly, especially in a knock-out round.

Wouldn’t be overly worried about playing Germany... except for that amazing half hour when they put 4 past Portugal last week..?! 😬😂
