I rather fear that Easter weekend will see millions of people out and about because the virus is gone now, innit. 😩
As I understand it, the jab doesn’t necessarily stop the transmission of the virus, it just protects the person who was jabbed?
In any case, can’t pretty much anybody from any global hotspot still just walk in to the country at Heathrow? 😫

Well yes the failure to control our border is one of the biggest problems, which the government still don't seem willing to rectify. All that taking back control was obviously well worth it. Kind of makes having a cup of tea in your Mum's garden look a bit insignificant.

Is your mother any good at FaceTime, skype, teams or any other videocalling platform Al? My 82-year old widowed Mother has remained sane largely due to her iPad over the last 12 months.

Yeah, we're good for video calling. It helps a bit. It was problematic because of the lack of decent internet in her area, but she is on a slightly better service now. It's still a bit glitchy but just about useable.

Worse things happen at sea in the Suez Canal. Unforeseen hazard of long-distance trade. If only we had countries closer at hand we could easily import stuff from...

I rather fear that Easter weekend will see millions of people out and about because the virus is gone now, innit. 😩 I think the rise in Europe we are seeing is as a result of the warm weather towards the end of February. There's a bit of a tourist attraction near where I live which we pass in the car when I take the dog on one of the walks we do down an old, unused, piece of autobahn. It was like people soup, some with masks, many without. The roads around here are like the tour de France on any sunny Sunday. Some people have no good old fashioned common sense.

Swapped out my winter tyres back to summers today. They've been on the car for 18 months as I never got around to changing them last Spring. I'm gambling that the car will actually move a bit more this summer of course. My 12 months mileage from the end of March 2020 just about scraped over 10,000. Which by comparison to my "normal" 36,000 or so is very low.

Mine did barely 3,000 in the same time.

Aye but proportionately maybe about the same? About 25-30% of "normal" ?

No. Actually proportionally much more. It did 5,500 in the previous 12 months. Since I no longer use a car on working days (or if I do, it’s a local trip in the EV) I had no business mileage to lose. And we did play some cricket last summer, and go on two reasonably distant UK stayaways, so the leisure usage held up in part. It just didn’t get to go to France and Germany as it normally would.

But the blocking ship was going to Europe so yes, if only the EU and UK had sufficient manufacturing resources to make buying goods from the Far East uneconomic...

How much money does the Suez canal operator make?! You’d think that they might have invested in plans and plant to try to mitigate an incident like this?!

What's the motivation to mitigate that risk? They have zero competition. Everyone will be using it again as soon as Uncle Albert has been towed out of the way. Reputational damage is irrelevent to Suez Canal PLC.

We used to say that about the Severn Bridge. The map suggests there’s room for a second canal to the east of the Sinai peninsula. It might be a welcome economic lifeline for Gaza.

The Suez canal makes use of several natural lakes so the real canal part is a small proportion of the total length.
Going from the Red Sea near Eilat to the Med up the Israel/Egypt border would be a monumental exercise as there are no natural features to make the job easier and some rather hilly sections to navigate. So it would be nice but unlikely.
A Med/Dead canal was mooted to increase the volume of water in the Dead Sea but it is still a long way off.
