No idea what emissions rating SWMBO’s Outlander diesel has. Nobody seems to care in this part of the world. Half of the country tool around in Ford Rangers with the 3.2 5-cylinder diesel which emits something like 230g/km... Clean & green? Pah!

adblue = cowspiss equivalent of petrol catalytic converter c.1991
Some politician has made a shitload of money out of nothing. End of the day, you can guarantee in 20 years time some letters of the chemical table will be killing the planet and the ejectorit will be hovering it up.

Alternatively, of course, if we all drive a lot less then many of us can probably revert to thirstier but cleaner petrol engines 😄. If the family car is barely doing 6000 miles a year then we can all redo the maths?
I thought that a by-product of Covid is that everybody is working from home and car usage is sharply down?

Well my UK mileage this year will be a lot lower.. ☹
In fact I suspect my worldwide mileage (well say UK and Israel) will be down 30% at least.

Your last sentence is the entire reason for this thread. I'm down from approx 200-250 miles a week to almost zero. And I'll only be doing about 50 a week when the schools go back. So in my case that's why I don't want 2 finance payments every month for cars doing very little, I'm now better off with one newish family car on finance for peace of mind and to cover all possible duties (my Civic), plus a second paid-for banger as a back up. There aren't any electric cars about under £2.5k yet, if there were I'd have one but there aren't. I've even been searching for a Vauxhall (shock, horror) Ampera, which are such brilliant cars that even the oldest ones with moon mileage are still about £8k. One of those would be absolutely perfect, as would a Leaf of course, if I could buy one for £2.5k.

We were just discussing that last night. In fact we're sort of there already, we have my 4 year old estate, my wife's 12 year old Qashqai and "his" 10 year old Aygo. The only car to have moved for two weeks is mine because it's being used as a bike transporter. None of them are worth all that much in the scheme of things, and are still probably more use to us as cars than cash, but we're in no rush to change any of them for bigger, better or newer versions right now.

Yes if they're all paid for, no issue. The thing with my Leaf is that because I've had it on a cheap PCP, there's still £4k to pay if I want to keep it. I can finance that on a zero percent credit card of course, but to pay it to off monthly at a rate I'd be happy with would be 2-3x dearer than half a tank of petrol a month in the Civic.

And of course if they are paid for and sitting there unused you may as well keep them anyway Humph. No point selling an unused car at a knockdown price and managing without it only to discover that in 6-12 months time* you need a second car again...
At barely 5000 miles/year use, it looks like I won’t be changing either car for the next few years, regardless of disposable income! What’s the point? Might just build that swimming pool that SWMBO wants instead...!

That's kind where I am Dixi. I'm can use any of the three, as can Mrs H, although at the moment, my son is only insured on his own car. But most eventualities are covered.

It’s not a lot of money, but it feels like a lot for a 15 year old car. If you kept it for 5 years it’d be a 20 year old car, if you see what I mean? There may be trouble ahead sort of thing?

We're not talking Morris Marinas here. Plenty of good 15-25 year old cars still running around. This one's a low miler and would remain so. Surely only rust would kill such a thing. And as you say, it's not a lot of money. Can you find much better, much newer, for around £2K? Probably not.

It's a Subaru, fairly robust mechanicals, very low mileage, I have not looked at the online MOT history. I suspect it will be thirsty @2.5 litre engine - no big deal given your low mileage.
The 2.5 will work against you when it comes to insuring for Al jnrs, I don't know if that's a blocker for you or not.

Loads of older Subarus down under, they seem to have a bit of a cult following. They must be fairly robust. The estates are much more popular than the saloons though, for some reason. Thirsty though.
Not my idea of bangernomics, at that price!

What would be your maximum budget for a banger, dixi?
