For 800 quid, it’s hard to see how you’d go far wrong. Thirsty enough thing mind you, and learner insurance might be a thing.
The green one though, now that could be a smart buy.

I’m not getting much velour or fake wood from that one either. Can it be a real Ghia without that Touch of Class ®️?
I drove one of those Xantia-Mondeos once — only once — while I was auditioning for what turned out to be the S60. It's about the only car I’ve ever driven where I’ve been seriously concerned about a poor rearward view. I’ve had bigger and more apparently view-compromised cars since — notably the CLS now — and they’ve been fine. Just something about that Mondeo didn’t work for me.

Estates are easier to park, you can see all the corners. If it's to be for a learner.

Funnily enough, I was talking to a friend last night who has just bought a very high mileage, but one owner, good condition, FSH etc, petrol V60. He works in Birmingham and he was running an old Alfa 156 Sportwagon diesel, but soon, that will be banned from that city. He didn't want to spend much on its replacement as he cycles in most of the time, and found the Volvo at a price he was happy with.

If you want wood on the dashboard, Al, what about a Jaguar X-type with Ford mechanicals? I suppose a petrol manual might be hard to find.
Or for the full 1940s front parlour effect, there's always the Rover 75. The de luxe versions of the 45 might have had wood too.

That'll be the top-of-the range 2.0 Cortina....which brings us back to Ghia. 1.6L Cortinas for the reps.

I was still at school. Wasn’t there a 2.3 V6 Cortina Ghia near the end of the run? Get one of those in metallic Espada Beige with the brown vinyl roof and the cute wheels with the little notches round the rim and Vić’ll be all set. Might need a moustache too, of course, but they’re available in all good joke shops and some bad ones.

There was the Cortina 2.3 V6. Don't think it offered much more power than the 2.0 4 cyl but was smoother. No more goodies than the 2.0 either. And I remember the 'Espada beige' - thank you WDB for the memory - although I think the Ford colour was slightly darker.
I owned a 2.0 Cortina GLS which was a special edition having a Ghia dashboard and S wheels and driving lights. I loved that car. I use the registation number now for some passwords.

I don't want to look like I enjoy asylum seekers drowning in the channel, whilst I'm teeing off on the 8th. Even I worry about image to a small degree.

But that might upset the children.
