But, further to your dilemma Al, in truth, we don't really need three cars most of the time, although there are occasions when it's more than handy. My big load lugging diesel for long runs, work, holidays, MTB trips, tip runs etc. Her medium sized petrol for local running, can substitute the Merc for many things if required, and his wee Aygo to get him about and this year to commute to uni as and when required, he's not going to live out this year for obvious reasons. But also, the little car gets used by me and indeed my wife if we just want to dive into town in traffic and grab a tiny parking space or something.

Oh don't beat yourself up too much. I've got a black belt in inertia. We bought this house off plan 18 years ago. I've never liked it, and in my mind, it is only a temporary stopgap property...🤔 Yeah. I took a stopgap job in 2008. Still here.

In 1999 I started a bit of consultancy work for a small firm of surveyors.... 21 years later I own the business. How did that happen?

OK - another bangernomics question....
Let's say I decide to keep the Merc but due to the likely inheritance, I fancy something small, sporty, reliable and cheap (say under £5,000 but happy to spend £1,000 a year on repairs and maintenance). Can't keep under cover as I have no garage. WOuld use it for about of my driving - say 2,500 miles a year.
Suggestions? To keep rust at bay, I think the Barchetta might be OK as our Punto hasn't rusted at all. But what about the Daihatsu Copen? Don't want an MX-5; too common.

Daihatsu is very very small. How have you been getting on with the daily cycling etc... 😉

Cycling has ceased due to two reasons...
1. Rain 2. My bike is 2,500 miles away and I haven't been out of the house to buy a new one. A friend recommended a Cycling for Cancer charity shop in Chorlton which I might go and peruse once I a free from quarantine.
Copen is very small, but Espadrille and I are only 5'7" (I'm 5'7 1/2" I keep insisting) so we can fit.
Alternatively what about an early 2000s hot hatch. Mk 5 Golf GTi??

I don't need two (or three if you count the Clubman). Can't a bloke just go for a drive without carrying stuff other than his missus?

You buy an Alfa convertible and I predict: 1. You'll still be driving the Mercedes all the time 2. You'll have a MINI Clubman shaped driveway ornament
Tricky one what to spend money on. All hot hatches will have had their fair share of abuse otherwise why have one ? Would you not prefer something wafty ? Like a mid-70s two door saloon Jaaaag or Daimler ? Give the impression you use the main entrance of the house rather than the tradesman's entrance.
Otherwise, I'd put the money away for when the Mercedes needs replacing, that will pay for a sunroof and a few extras off the options list.

No, the guy with the Alfa wants an estate, says so in his advert.

He forgot the condom and is going to spend the next 18+ years saving up to buy an Alfa convertible at the first chance to relive his carefree years when he still had colour in his hair or any hair.
