She fancies a week near Lake Garda this summer. Don't know why; we were there ten years ago and there were storms. Alternatively I am doing my annual south coast trip in late August this year because we will be down in South for a wedding on teh bank holiday weekend, so I said, why don't you join me and we can makea proper trip of it, staying in Devon or Cornwall? She has yet to decide.
Anyway this thread has made me think about getting to Lake Garda. Worth driving for two people?

Lake Garda would make a fantastic distal point for long, circular road trip. Down through France, past Mont Blanc and across the top of Italy, back through Austria and Germany. I’d probably want to take two weeks over it and smell the roses on the way. I don’t subscribe to the ‘just drive’ ethos; we all overestimate our endurance in that respect.
I’m supposed to be writing a proposal but I took a break to map out a circuit taking in Seyssel on the Rhône, Vaduz in Liechtenstein, Freiburg and Bonn. 2,800km plus getting to Folkestone and back. I’m suddenly very tempted!

Sounds lovely. Her objection will be that she hates sitting in cars for long journeys unless absolutely necessary. So your idea may work...

Euro road trip holidays were always our favourites, before certain cost centres appeared in the ointment.
Great memories of around Spain by FIAT Marea, Serbia and back by VW Touran (cost centre 1 carried internally by Mrs A for that one) and around France by SEAT Ibiza.

…Her objection will be that she hates sitting in cars for long journeys… Yes. To be honest, I’d rather do my trip (as it’s now become, in my mind at least) with someone who relished the driving part a bit more but we are, as always, where we are.

I suppose I’ve been doing versions of those trips for nigh on 50 years either for work or pleasure. I don’t mind the long trips, it’s hardly the Paris-Dakar when you’re on public roads. Used to like the hovercraft. Felt quite exotic, if a bit bouncy on occasion.

Hated the hovercraft. Stank of diesel fumes and made me travel sick. Urgh.

Yeah, I guess I’m lucky in that respect, my wife loves a long road trip and indeed is happy to take her turn at the wheel. She chucked the Westfield through alpine passes like a good ‘un back along.

Used to like the hovercraft. Felt quite exotic, if a bit bouncy on occasion. …and very fast — again, in the right conditions. With only 40 or so vehicles aboard, unloading was quick too. But I think Le Shuttle can match it on both counts, just lacking a little steampunk factor. Those were gas turbine engines, nothing so prosaic as diesel!

Were they gas powered? Blimey. They stank SO MUCH.

No. Gas turbines run on jet fuel.

Ah. That'll be it then. Not much of an engineer, me.
I start feeling ill around airports, too, when I get a whiff of aircraft fumes.

Kerosene isn’t it? Sort of posh paraffin I thought.

You can get a hydrofoil from Hong Kong airport to mainland China. That all feels a bit James Bond too.
