Yes but, there will be people involved in that too. Some will smell, some will have regional accents and some will be fat. No one needs that sort of thing on holiday. Then there will be the ones who want me to take my shoes off and others who will tell me when I can sit down or stand up. It’s just appalling the whole thing. 🙄

Ryanair used to run flights to Carcassonne and Perpignan every day. Yes it’s Yuk, but possibly cheaper than tunnelling and driving these days? Sadly not, checked it out. Over a grand for 4 of us. Then you've got to hire a car at the other end...

Also used to fly BA between Gatwick and Toulouse very frequently. Is that still an option?

I would rather shove wasps up my arse than fly short haul in Europe after this weekend.
I'm driving or ferrying in future.
The tunnel has not been £150 for a looong time. I usually pay around €280 for me in the Volvo alone or €330-370 with the Focus and family, the higher price if I put the roof box on.
Edit: North sea crossing Amsterdam to Newcastle for a family of four return has not been under €1,200 since COVID.
Edit2: This weekend was near enough €1,500 for a family of four - two teenagers, flying and another £480 for two nights in a Travelodge. Add in taxis and your grand vacance probably looks like good value.

Also used to fly BA between Gatwick and Toulouse very frequently. Is that still an option? Thanks but just not going to bother looking. It'll probably be more expensive, take all day to get there anyway and involve a couple of hundred sheets in parking or rail fares/taxis, needing a hire car, all of which I'd prefer to avoid also. Have booked the Civic in for a service a couple of weeks before departure, after, of course, wondering if I should sell it and buy a Skoda Superb... I think we'll get the Dover Dunkirk DFDS, that looks best value.

All alas most likely too true Al. Nicer to drive anyway.
I’d be happy with a cheap Channel crossing at ungodly a.m. Roads are quieter and less of the general public around. You probably lose a night’s sleep but Hey you’re going on holiday so it doesn’t matter, right?
I used to fly Stansted to Malmo quite a bit with Ryanair. Always pissed me off that a 25 quid return flight was overshadowed by over 50 quid in airport parking fees on a 3-4 day trip 😡

My car is due a now annual service about a week after we get back. It’s only done 11,000 miles this past year and it used to go 15,000 between services. It’ll do about 2000-2500 miles before the due date so will be near enough to do on miles/time. Running fine for now thank goodness. 😬

Call me old fashioned but losing a night's sleep is a bit of a barrier to driving all day the following day

I thought they'd stopped the ungodly hour crossings, I used the 1:30am crossing a lot. When I've used the tunnel lately they appear to stop around midnight and start again around 6am.
My Focus is due a service in August though I'd like to get the aircon recharged before we go on holiday in July. The car has only covered 5,000kms since the service last year, oil is currently 26%, I think it's more time than condition on that counter. Will probably leave the service until we get back.

I think the one I was quoted £323 was a 5am outgoing. Which is ungodly as I'd have to leave leave home at 2.30am to get it.
