Yes, everything is sickeningly expensive now. Just going through the same agony trying to agree on a summer holiday in August. Prices are sky high for what we want.
Have you looked at AirBnB?

If you go independent then flying into Faro or Catania with Easyjet an option from Manchester. Done both before but not last minute so maybe flights not so cheap. Faro was very good value over Christmas. We liked Faro itself (old town) and spent a week there and it was warm enough in December.
We just got back from Greece and we had so cold and windy days/afternoons. It was warmer/hotter when we first got there. It's got better since we're back home.

Majorca in late-May should be warming up? Nice hotel in Port de Soller on the NW side of the island.
Isn’t Barcelona always stuffed with tourists these days, and the locals are revolting?
Turning to less glamorous locales, does anyone have any suggestions for reasonably priced accommodation around the London Paddington area? Flying in to Heathrow mid-evening in early August and I am thinking of train in to west London and holing-up somewhere…. Might be more interesting than the hotels on Bath Road/A4 outside the airport?

Not sure about mainland Spain, the Canary Islanders have been kicking off about tourists.
"reasonably priced accommodation around the London Paddington area? ... in early August" going for the full set ? Hens teeth, rocking horse droppings and a Unicorn thrown in for good measure 🤣🤣🤣 What's reasonable in London, peak tourist season ?

There’s this place, right next to Hayes & Harlington station, so an easy train ride from LHR. www.staycity.com/londonI watched it go up over my years working in Blyth Road and it seems to be wearing well enough. The neighbourhood is, well, vibrant, but you’re connected to the entire Elizabeth Line.

Living so close to that area means I have no idea about hotels and the like, I'm afraid. Zero need to use them. Paddington itself is probably pricey due to proximity to railway station. Whilst probably not cheap, maybe the Notting Hill/Ladbroke Grove area might be worth investigating?

That’s where Hugh Grant lives isn’t it? Above a bookshop? 😉

Norm - I had a dilemma a year back as two of us (business colleagues) needed to stay somewhere for two nights. Two hotel rooms were something like £1,200. I found an Airbnb with two beds and two baths for £700. It was a purpose built flat where the whole block was owned by one company. You might find that more suitable. It was near Great Ormond Street Hospital (so not the ideal location for you) but you will probably find similar stuff to the west.

I hope the crisis is not so bad it cancels all holiday plans. Although we've had a family crisis again and it's still not all resolved. And I'm still dealing with probate and it's now fast approaching 12 months since I started. And it's a really simple estate! And DWP debt recovery are involved too because of pension credit which is partly because they thought there was over £100k in Premium Bonds I think which is impossible.

Thank you hive mind; I am happy to drop the west London idea!
Plan B (for boring) is to stay outside the airport and pick up my rental wheels next morning. Plan C - and I need your input for it to be viable - is to get out of the airport asap and bowl down the M4 for 20-30 minutes. Check-in somewhere and be in a pub by 10pm for a couple of pints, to be followed by a curry or kebab around closing time. 😋 Any suggestions on a suitable location? Google suggests Maidenhead/Taplow area at first glance. Would Reading be better..?

In another life, a few decades ago, when I worked for an American software and consultancy firm, UK HQ on Baff Rd., Sla', I would stay at the Crown in Cookham. Pub, good food and somewhere to sleep, when I had to be in HQ.
No idea what it's like now. Last time I was there was 2003. Always preferred it to hotel chain international in and around where I was working.
