Would Reading be better..? No. Although August isn’t the time the tourists flock to Reading, which is, erm…erm… And the drug dealers probably won’t start arriving for the festival for another couple of weeks. Cookham is still pretty, or you could turn left off the motorway to somewhere like Datchet. That whole stretch is well equipped for visitors, so it’s a more a question of how much you want to spend. Twyford is small but good for curry. Give Vić and me some warning and we might even come and meet you there.

Reading will be fine for a hotel for the night, and some decent pubs and curry houses to choose from.
Windsor would be a good choice too. Maidenhead has recently started to show promise in this area, with some good watering holes and food places springing up - I think the Elizabeth Line and being on the London Underground map has encouraged this sort of thing. Wokingham is decent too.
Are you a traditional real ale type man, or are you into new fangled craft stuff? What sort of curry do you like? Trad English curry house menu, or something a bit more authentic and/or modern? I can give extensive recommendations in the Thames Valley for both types of pubs and curry joints.

Thanks chaps! There seems to be a wealth of opportunities. Think it’s best that I focus on speed/convenience - if I exit the airport around 8:45pm how quickly can I be with pint-in-hand somewhere reasonable?
I am exploring the Travelodge website for accommodation - is this a bad idea?
Am not remotely fussy about specific beers or pubs Al! Anywhere safe will do, perhaps without Fullers draught beers 😉.
And Yes - feel free to join me! It’ll be a Thursday night: best night of the week isn’t it?!

Also check out the obvious booking sites. So booking.com, hotels.com (part of Expedia?) but also Trivago. But I often find the accommodation direct is cheaper.

If you are staying in an international chain of hotels over the duration of your trip it may be worth signing up for membership. You can make some decent savings and they may have something you're looking for in and around the London area.

If you're happy with Travelodge, I'd go for the Central Windsor one. You have to park in the public multi-storey next door, but you get a discount rate from the hotel. That'll have you pint-in-hand by 10pm if you leave the airport perimeter by at the time you state. Go much further west and you'll risk missing closing time. Lots of pubs and bars in central Windsor.

Most of my points from my pre-covid travels have expired but I found enough in my IHG account to pay for the Holiday Inn Express rooms (oh, the glamour!) we need the night before Boy1’s early-morning graduation.

Ok, accommodation booked, kind of near St Tropez, early June, couple of weeks, yippee. Digs cheap, tunnel stupidly expensive, hey ho, don’t care. 😎

I’ve gone right off booking.com. Have used the site for years but now it’s full of b&b listings whilst many of the hotel chains don’t seem to use it anymore. No longer the best prices either.
Case in point: Holiday Inn Express. Are they nicer than Travelodge? (Neither brand appears in booking.com searches).
Had a zillion Hilton points a few years ago, but have frittered them away..!

It depends what you want from the hotel. When I'm travelling in the UK I'll use Premier Inn, usually close to main routes, fixed price evening meal and breakfast can be added for a reasonable charge. Saves having to go looking for food after an 8+ hour drive.
Staying in a Travelodge in Edinburgh for the next two nights. Family get together. It is just somewhere to sleep and have breakfast. Rooms have the basics, don't need any more and for £60/head/night including breakfast don't feel like I'm getting robbed.

Good rooms, clean, comfortable and usually very conveniently located. Some, like the one in Warwick they are full of tradesmen which makes the car park full and the restaurant noisy, so I stay elsewhere, others are small and quiet like the one by the helicopter manufacturer in Yeovil.

No, I'm too old for that now. It's a quick trip in Saturday, out Monday. Airport was it's usual efficient best. 1h 20m flight, 1h 10m wait at baggage carousel. Other flights came and baggage was offloaded quickly. The baggage from the Eurowings flight somehow disappeared for over an hour.

Fair enough, I think I’d probably do the same and suffer the consequences for a short trip like that. Most of the time I prefer to avoid air travel now though, having spent a lifetime being required to do it on a regular basis, I fail to see any pleasure in the process anymore. Far rather drive even if it takes longer. Long haul exceptions apply of course.

Booked our summer hols this weekend finally, and, like Humph, it's the south of France, we'll be going by car. Near Carcassonne.
Haven't booked the tunnel yet and I do not like Humph's "stupidly expensive" comment above. Has it gone up significantly this year then?
