Brown? Where do I sign up? Went to AW Cycles website and my Symantec went mental about webjacking or something. Also, their cheapest hybrid is about £1500. AW’s website is terrible, like something from the 1990s. But a ten-minute chat will move your thinking on a long way. A good specialist retailer (in any field) is a thing of joy and beauty.

Me neither. I've emailed them but I expect the website is out of date and it's sold. Looks comparable to WDB's Vitus Dee recommendation, which was £70 cheaper but not in stock anywhere.

It's pretty but it looks heavy. A 42:34 bottom gear isn't going to get you up many hills, and won't give you enough control when the going gets rough. (I found a tarmac hill last week that almost defeated my 40:42 gear.) If you're looking for something to ride principally off-road, you need something more athletic than that.

Good tips, thanks. I think that Vitus Dee you linked to is possibly the one to go for, if I go at all. I've asked them to email me when it's in stock. Confusingly, I seem to need the Large size frame - there are only 2 options, large and small.

Forgive me if it's already been mentioned upthread or whatever, but one that might attract me ( given your brief ) is the Specialized Sirrus.

The same Specialized Sirrus you quite fancied as a 'cycle path hacker'?

Too many gears I think. Vitus is a single front cog, 9-speeder. I think this is the spec for me to focus on. And the Vitus is the same price as a Carrera Subway 2.

As you're finding out, the problem these days is getting hold of one. Not just whole bikes; components are in short supply too. The blue bike is running out of rubber on its rear tyre, and while I know exactly what I want as a replacement, it's not in stock anywhere.

Yes, I expect I'll just keep on with my BSO POS for now.

If it's working, that might be the best option, as was ( also ) previously mentioned, I reckon there'll be some reet royal mildly used bargains to be had shortly.

...when being a standard (albeit in-between) size will be a distinct advantage. (Provided they're not anywhere high up, of course.)
