I've got a 16" Carrera Vulcan ( used to be my son's when he had short legs ) you could have at a very reasonable price ( twirls moustache and cackles gently in anticipation )

That [the Cube] is a nice bike for riding to work over reasonably level city streets but probably not the best for what you want to do. The Nexus hub gears and Gates belt drive are great for being clean and low-maintenance but they add weight and reduce the gear range if you want to ride rough tracks or fast roads.

Which one, Dubya? Humph's? EDIT OK, gotcha, the Cube.
What did you think of the Boardmans?

Boardmen are actually really nice bikes for the money. Bit like M&S suits, but with a similar level of cool...

Are those hybrids I linked to a bit "roady"?

The 8.6 looks decent value for the price. The 8.9 looks decent but expensive — £200 more than my Whyte, and with tyres that are very tarmac-focused. Neither is an off-road machine if that’s primarily what you want.

Are those hybrids I linked to a bit "roady"? Maybe, but swapping out the tyres to something more manly would cure that.

Ok, thanks all, Whyte Whitechapel probably a better bet if I could get one. Would have to enquire at AW. Are the tyres on the Whitechapel more off-roady than the Boardman 8.8?

They’re only 32mm, which isn’t huge but you have the reassurance that the R7 frame will take much bigger — I have 47mm on mine and there’s room for wider still, not that I feel the need.

The front tyre is a WTB Resolute, and if you are lucky enough to be able to find the 2020 version of my bike (I have the 2019) it will come with two of them. That’s the setup I’d like for mine too. I also like the look of the similar René Herse Hurricane Ridge, but it’s equally hard to find and fabulously expensive, so the WTB will be just fine if I can get one. And I’ve got two! I didn’t want to jinx it with a premature announcement but they arrived this afternoon from the bike accessories dealer we use most often. £65 or so for the pair, as against typically £45 for one, and I’ll need the second before very long. They'll probably want a couple of days to relax having been wound up, before I try putting one on the bike.

Vić, if you’re tired of all this waiting and just want to get on with it, the Subway 1 in size S is showing as In Stock at Halfords in Maidenhead. Not worth the bother of C2W at £300, and you could pick it up this afternoon. Not perfect, as discussed, but you could do a lot worse.

Thanks for that WDB but it's a size smaller than I need, and really not that much better a bike than my TRAX, so would be a waste of money. I'm happy enough to wait until August or beyond, it really isn't an emergency.

If you were thinking that you'd maybe not use a bike much in winter, you might be surprised how often it's more than enjoyable and possible. Of course you also get the dozy gits who go up pointy bits of Wales in the snow too 😉
We did that over the Christmas break a few times, and it was a gas, but it'd be quite hard on one of those girly-tyred things that WDB favours... 😎

But those ‘things‘ are perfectly happy in the lanes and woods on a bright winter day, and you don’t need to drive your bike to your ride. Just get a good jacket and some windproof gloves. There are plenty of those in the sales right now.
