Back on COVID, #1 daughter is a student at Reading University. At least it means I have an excuse to enjoy the occasional kebab when I visit.
Anyway, Saturday she got very ill and called me. We suspected COVID, and since she was symptomatic then it had to be a PCR test not LFT - just as well because none of the Reading town centre pharmacies had LFTs. All very efficient and easy to organise, got her an appointment and test very quickly.
It was negative, which was a temporary relief. But she didn't get better. Last night a call to the NHS 111 service resulted in her ending up in the RBH A&E at stupid o'clock with suspected meningitis.
The point of this post;
Apparently false negatives are a problem. I did not realise this. I guess I knew there was a chance but assumed it was tiny and ignorable since worldwide a negative PCR test seems to be accepted as gospel. But both 111 when she spoke to them and RBH when she arrived both said that it was a risk and she would be treated as possibly positive until a second PCR test was done. Apparently two tests 2 days apart is the thing for certainty.
Who knew? Not me.
As an aside, the service from both 111 and RBH was excellent. A relief for me being 8,500 miles away.

Glad (but not surprised) to hear you got good service. The RBH is genuinely one of the reasons I've stayed here over the decades, and boy have we needed the local healthcare services in that time.
Does your daughter have confirmed meningitis then? How is she doing?
Just to say, you know where I am in case of an emergency.
Covid infection numbers locally are still terrifying, which is why I'm still pretty much confining myself to a self-imposed lockdown. Very occasional socialising or even shop visits only.

That’s a tough enough thing to deal with for a parent on the spot. Is she improving now?

I have long been a satisfied customer of theirs. They've stuck me back together a few times.
>>Does your daughter have confirmed meningitis then?
She got some blood tests back which suggest not and the Doctor's opinion is 'not', though she certainly has got a significant virus. It was the headaches, rash, difficulty breathing and sensitivity to light which 'alarmed' them.
>>How is she doing?
Stressed, exhausted, emotional, scared etc. etc. as you would expect with a first major illness so far from her family. However, my sister is now with her and that is reassuring. Her symptoms are not improving, but neither are they getting worse.
>>Just to say, you know where I am in case of an emergency.
Thank you, I really appreciate that. I was in The Griffin fairly recently, almost sent you a note, wish I had now, but I'll buy you a pint next time.

She's vax'd and boosted, and with no pre-existing conditions, and she is also very careful -mask, cleanliness, avoiding confined spaces etc. etc. So until Saturday I was unstressed about it all. Reading Uni is pretty careful as well.

She's stopped getting worse, which is almost as a good.

OK, hope she improves soon. Bloody freshers' year can be a nightmare for viral infections at the best of times. Fox and Hounds is a better bet for a pint these days. Oh, and Kings Grill, on Kings Road, is the best kebab in town by some margin.

Is it? I wouldn't have guessed that. I used to go in there a million years ago when I worked at Elliotts, which I am sure is no longer there. It was ok, but I'd never have guessed at a good pint.

Good to know, when #1 is back on her feet I shall send her on a recce.

Yeah the Fox has been under good ownership for a few years now, and always has a huge range of beers on, even though it's a bit too biased towards the craft/hoppy stuff due to the landlord's personal proclivities. He knows how to keep an ale though so all is well. They've also built a really good outdoor/covered area for these stange times. The other place to definitely go if you like a proper pint is the tapyard at Loddon Brewery, just outside Cav in Dunsden Green. Outstanding brewery, that is.
There's a road of new build houses and flats near the Fox, just down the side of Wings Fish Bar (still the best chippy in town) called Elliots Way - I think that probably answers one of your questions.

I just looked on Google Maps because that's an area I know particularly well - Now that entire operation has arrived since the last time I was there. Impressive, I shall give it a go.
Frankly I got a bit depressed going around all my favourite pubs which all seemed to have either closed or become rubbish.

Yes the pub and beer scene has completely changed in the last 10 years. Breweries have finally had a renaissance in the town, since the big old plodders like Courage all sodded off. Look at Double Barreled Brewery, Phantom Brewery, and Siren Craft Brew a bit further out. For starters. All have tapyards/indoor bars. A pub crawl of the best pubs in town looks very, very different from even a few years ago. Nag's Head off the Oxford Road is probably the best known re-invented pub. A no-go pub some years ago, absolutely brilliant now.

Up the side of the Gaumont cinema? I used to use that back in the 70s. It could be challenging at times.
What is The Butlers like now? (Chatham Street car park way), that used to be one of my favourites. And what about the Fisherman's Cottage on the Kennet?

I pass it a lot — or did before the cycling mojo deserted me. Must remember to stop some time, when it’s not so bloody depressing outside.

Oddly enough I've never been in either of those other two you mention, but I hear the Butlers is an "OK", and the Fisherman's is a bit weird. They installed a "swimming Pool" there during lockdown...all a bit peculiar.

Hope she is well soon - a worry being so far away. I can see why they suspected meningitis from those symptoms.
I guess this is another problem with Covid being so common - we all assume if someone is unwell it might be Covid. At her age though, Omicron would probably be asymptotic especially if vaccinated.

It is always worrying being away from home and being really ill; especially if young. Hope she starts to improve soon. Although frightening, when she gets out she will have more confidence about the local health arrangements than before which is no bad thing.
How is her sister coping being the only child at home now?
