Great. I commiserate on the insurance cost aspect but another errand runner is always useful. Is he going to be next regular Merc driver

If he’s not going to be the main or most regular user of the Aygo, it might be cheaper to make him a named driver as opposed to a main one. Dunno. We took the view that we made our son the main driver and policy holder as soon as he passed to start building up his ncb.

Thanks all. At the moment the policyholder is his brother, who’s barely touched the thing but who did at least live at the same address as the car. I’ll probably let that continue, with whatever the additional premium turns out to be, till renewal time in June, then reconsider whose name ought to be where.
I don’t really want to keep the Aygo any longer than we have to. Boy1 will need to build up some experience, so he can drive himself regularly once he begins his industrial placement late next summer. And Boy2 needs to pass a test, which he will ideally do before then. Then we can offload it, either for something Boy1 can travel more comfortably in, or just for more space on the drive.

Congratulations! But on insurance front, if he's now driving it on his own you need to tell the insurance ASAP. I assume you're telling them he's passed but holding off making him main driver? EDIT: Think you said you were doing the telling bit but not changing main driver.... a lot of insurance increase of course

Nope, I said that he and the car are 60 miles apart, and I will worry about changing the insurance when he comes back in four weeks' time.

So I've agreed to buy the Corolla for £1500. Collecting it tomorrow. I'll do the tyres etc myself. Yes, I'm paying too much for it. There's not much else to choose from and we both really like it. So fine.

You sink your money in it, and there you are: The owner of a two-thousand-dollar thousand-dollar car.
Hope it tuns out well.

I did offer £1300 and we settled in the middle.

Ach it’ll be great fun anyway. We all enjoyed the experience when H Jnr was learning. A few nervous moments here and there of course, as could be expected, but treat it as fun as well as a necessity and it’ll be a breeze.

…and if the tyres are legal for now, then I’d not bother changing them yet. You’ll not be doing any great speeds for a while.

That is true but 2 of them are quite visibly cracking, so I'll get them done.

BTW, WDB, looking at Kwik Fit the Michelin Cross Climates are £68 at the moment. I must have missed the offer you mentioned.
