We went and test drove the red, X-reg 57k mile Corolla yesterday. Body work a touch rough but nothing you wouldn't expect on a 21 year old car. No proper rust visible anywhere, pretty new exhaust system, overall surprisingly good condition. Drove like a dream, felt pretty much brand new to be honest. The interior is utterly unmarked and fragrant. Only real down side is a collection of 4 horrible mismatched nasty old tyres, 2 of which are getting perished, so it needs new all round (got my eye on Kormoran All Seasons at £53 a corner). The lad loved it, so we came home to think about it and I'll try to make an offer on it I think. Reminder: www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110068183418

If you’d prefer a tyre not named after a black thing that likes to dive into a river, a quick google tells me Kwikfit will sell you four Michelin CrossClimate+ for £57.80 a tyre. I know which I’d choose.

I took my daughter out yesterday for her first on the road session with me in the Punto. The driving instructor said it was fine to do so....
Well, she has become so used to Stop/Start cars and cars with diesel engines that she doesn't realise what stalling is. A few tears but she was mostly fine. My nerves are not totally shredded...

BTW, and purely for academic interest, Kormoran are owned by Michelin. Made in Poland.

Good luck with the haggling! Maybe aim for 1200 quid?

BTW, and purely for academic interest, Kormoran are owned by Michelin. Made in Poland. The first part seems to be a matter of record. And the brand did originate in Poland. But the source appears to be the Tigar factory in Serbia. The Kormoran website seems not to want us to know this. Factory. Kormoran tyres are produced in a European tyre factory belonging to one of the worldwide leading tyre manufacturers. The passenger tyre factory has passed the quality monitoring system and has been certified by independent auditors: CERTIFICATE ISO 9001.

Ok, surely not an issue either way. Plenty of folk rolling around in entire cars built in Serbia. Like my Mum.

Looks good enough Al. Guess I’d be looking very closely for rust at that age. Also annual tax at £210 isn’t the best. But, if it’s really as a good as it looks, then it might be worth a go. I know we’re in strange times for prices, but that still feels like a lot for a 21 year old very mainstream car.

You should see how much they want for a mainstream 21-year old house round here.

Have to say, I’m pleased with the way the little Aygo has worked out. Had it coming up for five years now. Just tyres and services when needed, it has been faultless. Cheap to buy and run and despite my son's aspirations to get it to outperform the Millennium Falcon, it has absolutely been fit for purpose. It’s taken him from learning to drive, through sixth form and uni, and been a platform for mountain biking trips etc.
It’s nearly 12 years old now and has 60 odd thousand miles on it. I asked him recently if he fancies a change but he’s happy enough to keep it.

Not quite so thrilled with our Aygo, although it’s fine for what it does. I do fit behind the wheel but it’s sometimes a struggle to get my knees under and I have to choose my shoes with care.
It does at least have four fresh, name-brand tyres on it. On a damp road I can hear every drop of water they squeegee off the surface.

In the Corolla we tested, my lad was just about comfortable behind the wheel, with the seat all the way back. I just about fit in behind him, and then there's quite a large long boot/crumple zone behind any rear seat passengers. I'm happier with that layout than a stumpy little car like an Aygo.

The Aygo is strictly a two-seater anyway, so the crumple zone / safety cage is big enough for that. The rear seat is for folding (I’ve had my cricket bag in there) or as a coat shelf.

H Jnr quite likes his mum’s Jeep. If he were to change he says he’d be looking at something similar. Something with a bit of extra ground clearance for accessing more remote mtb venues, room inside for musical instruments and ancillary detritus. Roof rails for the bike racks etc. I can see the appeal for his usage.
And yes, a bit more car around him can’t be a bad thing.
