…or, we could take the Jeep to France as it has good tyres on it. But then, petrol prices and luggage space eh? Hard isn’t it, being me? 😉

Hang on a minute, let me over think this...
Is there any chance you'll pop over the border into Italy ? They have a strange rule about winter tyres. The speed rating has to equal or exceed the max speed of the vehicle.
I only put H rated winter tyres on my car and as long as I have a sticker located in a prominent place near the Speedo or start button it's OK in Germany. Not OK in Italy. The car has a top speed of 140-ish, the tyres 130, the Italian motorway speed is 80. Work that one out. Must be for when I do a Monza track day 🤔

You're keeping the Merc long term, right? If so, new Cross Climates (or similar) all round, now.

Won’t be near Italy, but we will be near Spain and might venture that way. Speed ratings are fine, they’re quite posh winter tyres. Or they were anyway. Also, I have a Critair sticker for the Merc but not the Jeep. It’s all quite a faff isn’t it?

Yes, I'm surprised we can still see out the windscreen by the time we get anywhere.
I've got a green umweltplakette for Germany, a Swiss vignette, will pick up an Austrian vignette if we come back via lake Garda. If we go to Prague later in the year will be another vignette for Czechia, and then there's France and any city visits. 🙄 You'd think they'd have an EU standard. Oh, they do and your annual vehicle tax is based on it allowing you to drive on the road network. This is a second tax to discourage you from using the road network in select areas.

The other thing of course is that if I get some all season tyres, then they are not interchangeable or mixable with either of the “old” sets. Not that I plan to mix and match, but in the event of suddenly needing to replace one tyre it can be handy to possess a suitable spare. The tyres on my car are a funny size and aren’t always easily available, or at least aren’t always available at sensible prices, so having a temporary solution can be useful.

Sheesh. Get a set of All Seasons on and be done with it. Buy a spare wheel with a matching tyre also. Job done, sit down, pour beer.

Yeah, y’see, two things, there’s an AdBlue tank where the spare wheel should be and the front tyres are a different size to the back ones. I don’t think you can begin to understand how hard it is for me! 😉

Sounds like a horrendous faff. Bleh. New car time, then. A proper one this time.

I can. Although I do have a (slim) spare wheel. (Where the 285x19 tyre it’ll be deputising for will go if I ever use it with a full load is another question.)
No Crossclimates available in my sizes, though, last time I looked.

Those space saver bike wheels are all well and good allowing you to continue at 50mph to somewhere to get the proper tyre fixed but where do you put it if you are running full on holiday for example ? A 285 or whatever on a 19" rim is not going to fit where a 135/80 on a 16" rim was.
Don't think any of the rear seat passengers will thank you if you ask them to nurse a manky, wet wheel and tyre.

I suppose that’s another reason why a sunroof is handy. You could get the front seat passenger to sit on the removed wheel and stick their head out through the roof. They’d need some sunglasses I suppose but I really can’t see any other drawbacks. 🤔
