I also wish you the best of luck. Hope it works out as you hope it will.

A-level results day.
Last year son #2 managed BBC and was disappointed with his Maths result (B) as he got an A in each of four modules but an E in two Mechanics modules. He reckoned the teaching was poor (a comment I heard from other parents) and accepted he had been distracted by volunteering at a youth club. Anyway he retook the two modules and his overall result has risen from B to A*, so he is very happy.
Anyone else got any A-level good news stories?

Sorry Esp - hadn't seen this before our discussion in the other thread. That's a real achievement - it takes some character to go back and repeat something like that. Well done him!

Dragging this conversation over to where I probably ought to have started it... WDB - delighted to hear of Beestling no. 1's success. You believed in him and he believed in himself - that's half the battle. Out of interest, where and what at university? Engineering at Southampton. He’s considering whether to go straight in or to defer his place and take up the possibility of a year’s placement with an aerospace engineering firm first. If he goes the placement way, it might encourage him to learn to drive, as his girlfriend and chauffeuse will be taking her maths to Sheffield.

I hate to break it to him, but the girlfriend probably isn't going to last much beyond freshers' week...

They both seem sanguine about that. Pity in a way because this one’s lovely. (Preferable to mad like the first one, two years ago — although that had more to do with the mother than the poor girl herself.)
He’s failed miserably to find himself a driving instructor, though. Any suggestions, Vić or CD, since we live halfway between you?

No, sorry, driving instructors are not on my radar yet. I'll ask around down the pub tonight though, some of my mates have older cost centres who may have recommendations (or de-recommendations come to that).
Is the Frog and Frigate still going in Southampton? I have some jolly splendid memories of that place.

I hate to break it to him, but the girlfriend probably isn't going to last much beyond freshers' week... It can do. Daughter went to Sheffield (Hallam) whilst her boyfriend went to Southampton to do Ship Science. They're now married. Freshers week didn't seem to be too much of a hazard though they did end up having a break from each other for a couple of months later in their first year. Probably helped that we're a reasonable half way house and that trains from Southampton to the North West call at Banbury which is barely half an hour from here.
