Your last two sentences describe my working life perfectly. Only it's not a nagging doubt, it's stone cold truth.

Well, like I said, I don't think that's a particularly unusual scenario, however depressing that might be. Most people I know are, or have been, caught in some kind of wage trap. What's that old saying about 'no one is going to pay you what you need to earn, for knowledge or experience you don't have.'
I shall buy that Dacia Duster, a map and a tent one day. Might go and save turtles or something. 😉

My situation too; although there’s plenty I enjoy about what I do for a living, it’s there to fund the rest of my life rather than being a life in itself.
Like Humph, I have an idea that it might not be for ever. With luck and planning I might be able to do some kind of downshift in a few years, when I’ll be 55 or so. I have a blue notebook that contains, among much else, an outline plan for a photographic tour of Europe’s industrial heritage, featuring a combination of bicycles, boats and an electric Saab 900. I did say it might take a year or two to realize!

My later life plans involve simply eating myself to death in France (don't worry, my Maltese citizenship is imminent so I will remain an EU citizen). I might also go to the pub a bit.

You're getting Maltese citizenship?
Cool, will you marry me? I promise there wouldn't have to be any of that consummation malarkey! 😬

Sorry, the job is already taken. Maltese citizenship is relatively easy to apply for. I qualify through a grandparent, and once mine is granted my spouse and children can have it too. The right is passed on down the generations so long as there isn't a break in holding the citizenship, regardless of residence. So my grandfather was Maltese, my mother does not have the citizenship but is still alive, so we have applied for hers and it is due to be granted when she visits the High Commission with her paperwork in a fortnight. After that, I'm good to go. Then the wife and sprogs.
Don't worry Humph, couple of years form now and you'll be able to get a Scottish passport.

My attitude to work was exactly the same as WDB's above - some people live to work, but it's a better quality of life if you work to live. I got to senior manager, but was never ambitious for the top level. When she was about 15, my younger daughter said 'Dad, I'm glad you never went for the top job - I'd never have seen you'. To me that matters more than ambition.
As the only one of us (I think) who's got to that stage, I can thoroughly recommend semi-retirement. I still write and examine, which is enjoyable and supplements the pension, but nearly all of it can be done at home: and there's time for plenty of voluntary things to keep me sane - and to avoid gardening apart from mowing and pruning.

>>I've by and large done ok as a result, but there has always been a nagging doubt that I do what I do purely for money, rather than for any form of passionate interest.
Not me. I could not conceivably have chosen a better career than the one I had. Loved it, passionately interested in it, and did quite well from it.
Not that I ever chose it, I wandered into it. Glad that I did though.

Ahem. I retired from full time work when I was 46. I've dabbled from time to time over the last few years, but not much and I haven't worked full time in many years.

I've dabbled from time to time over the last few years, but not much and I haven't worked full time in many years. I haven't done a day's paid work for 10 years (though some might say a lot longer). Generally enjoyed my work, until I no longer did, and negotiated an exit. Turned down a lot of lucrative consulting in the early days, but have never really been tempted back Decent savings and pensions help, of course. (Sorry Humph)

Ach it's fine, I'll just sell off body parts or something. It's amazing how many things we've got two of. 😉
Actually, it turns out, having consulted a financial advisor chappie, that I discover that I'm rather a lot better off than I thought. Not going to be wealthy or anything, but we won't by any means starve. Probably keel over now of course.

My very good friend just unexpectedly died, 10 months before his [late] retirement date. So many plans never to be realised.
Don't make the same mistake.

Oddly enough at the same age (now) I have cut down to working Wed-Fri.
4 day weekends are great.
