Never liked G&T until I tried Fever Tree tonic with a non standard gin. Difference between Bells and Macallan it was...

I agree with Noghausen. On all of that, particularly the small tin/bottle thing, although Lidl's is so cheap by the litre it doesn't matter, and I will get through the litre in a day or two when I'm in the mood for G (or V) and T. Lidl's tonic is indistinguishable from Schweppes to me.

V&T ? What do you add for flavour ? A slice of raw Maris Piper or King Edward ? I'm off to see the doctor, I find myself agreeing with Nogbad far too often these days, think I'm coming down with distemper (not to be confused with Moscow Ska Punk band) or something.

It's ok for you, it's nearly 5.30 on a Friday in Germany. We've got to wait a while yet before gin is seemly... 😕

My tastes buds have taken such a hammering from vindaloos and phalls over the years that I'm not that fussed. V&T is just alcoholic tonic water really, so what could be wrong with that?

An old friend of mine who went into the diplomatic service, has spent a lifetime more or less exclusively drinking vodka, lime and Perrier. I think he has been known to down a triple espresso to re-energise himself in the very early mornings but as soon as it's daylight he defaults to his preferred option. He claims its to do with killing any bugs in the liquid in far flung locations. I think it's more to do with him being an old soak but he's a pleasant enough one I suppose.

I intend to, one of these little chaps next after another Chimay: Mother and daughter are out getting their nails done, we're out at some party tomorrow evening and I'm driving so guess who is not driving ANYWHERE tonight...

I'm going to be virtuous and have an early swim tonight, we're out tomorrow too and I'm driving so it may be necessary to schedule a couple, ( does couple necessarily have to mean two? ) of Bombay Saphires in when I'm cooking later...

....I have been to Chimay...... ....it was shut.... I'm lucky, I have a Belgian mate, the beer comes to me. I can't imagine anything worse than making a special trip including ferry's to find nothing there. I'm planning a trip to the north pole of Europe next summer with my bike. I'm not expecting much other than some remote lookout point, a post office and a billion puffins or other sea birds. Why ? Because I can. You've got to have something to aim for otherwise what's the point ? If I was down in Otto's part of the world I suspect I'd be doing what the Top Gear folks did (excuse my ignorance of the local geography) and heading as far south as I could because it's there.

The Laverstoke distillery apparently does tours combined with gin-mixing classes. I could be very tempted by that. If I still lived in neighbouring Overton, as I did for five years in the 1990s, I'd be there in a flash - which probably isn't the best idea in a distillery. 🤔 Not sure about the gin mixing class, I did the tour of the Laverstoke distillery week or two back. (in fact second day I had the Beemer) Its a fantastic old site, was a paper mill that made banknote paper. The two main large stills are visible but not accessible, and they have two smaller batch gin stills, where you get the full tour and spiel, and even taste (on your finger) the raw near 100% proof stuff. Part of the tour is a botanicals room, where you get to smell all the various types, punch your favs onto a card, and then they will mix you a cocktail to your profile. Needs to be booked, but its a very very worthwhile tour. Had a meal in the White Heart in Overton, New chef and staff, good food. Agreed, the Laverstoke distillery tour is well worthwhile. BTW, if you'd told me that you were planning a special trip to my backyard I could have helped with your visa application and arranged a personal tour of all the amazing cultural attractions that Basingstoke has to offer. The White Hart used to be absolutely dire and was closed down for a while but the new owners have done a superb job. Good place to enjoy a cool drink and watch the swallows on a summer evening. The Red Fort just around the corner in Winchester Street is also the best tandoori for miles.
