No such thing as thread drift around here... Condolences WDB We've touched on driving, bereavement and family duties, wine and gin in less than a page... Perhaps we should retitle the thread "Gin up North?" Not tried that one, but on a wider gin note, the number of small batch artisan/craft gin distillers that have popped up is astonishing, all since a change in policy by HMRC who used to rule all gin distilling with a rod of iron. I have one near me, Silent Pool*, that produces very good gin indeed, in part because they use chalk water filtered out of the Surrey hills. Enjoyed another in the Salcombe distillery month or two back, and of course the small batch gin from Bombay mentioned above. There were a lot of gin producers at the Bath Xmas market yesterday, which has prompted me into a kind of hobby I think. Multifaceted one. I am going to research small batch distilleries within a two hour drive of me, and when our supplies at home dwindle, we shall be off on a day trip to a distillery see the still, see thier botanicals tray, and purchase a bottle. If I can mix in a lunch and a dog walk that should be hunky dory. Every year, we hire a cottage, and have a dog week in the UK, lots of eating out, lots of walks with dog, and a lot of booze at night. This year was Devon, hence the Salcombe distillery, next year is Whitby, but Yorkshire appears to be a bit of a gin desert! *For a craft gin, not outrageous £35 bottle in Waitrose, 30 quid if you toddle over (20 min drive) and pick it up yourself.

I'll have a look on Amazon for Silent Pool...38€ delivered to my door, I can even get Heinz Baked beans through Amazon these days. Not worth getting the car out the garage for that and certainly more than the 20 minutes to drive over and pick it up in person. Though, it would serve as justification for a weekend trip before Christmas.

Gin is just vodka flavoured with whatever they can scrape up off the forest floor, which has usually been through a couple of foxes, twice.
Don't get the current hipster fad for the stuff. Lidl's cheapest with Lidl's tonic water, ice and a slice, is a nice summer drink though.

You might start worrying about the path the water took to your hot water system then how would you take a bath or a shower? Of course, if you stop bathing then your own aromatics would start playing havoc with your taste and sense of smell not to mention the olfactory senses of those around you. Oh man ! Al look what you've started...

Firstly, Lidl tonic? What are you thinking man?? A crap tonic makes a crap G&T just as much as crap Gin does. Bloody amateur alcoholics. Secondly, I had some MOM Gin at an Embassy bash a couple of weeks ago. Now *that* is worth seeking out. One of the nicest I've had in a long time.

An appropriate name for a gin. However, in English, it's spelled 'Mum'.
Also, Lidl tonic is just as good as any standard branded tonic. If you can tell the difference, you're a better alcoholic than I.

..... but Yorkshire appears to be a bit of a gin desert! ...I'm not sure that Yorkshire is, (with quite a few small distillers, including some prize-winners)but Whitby might well be.... ....though if you fancy Gin and Chintz.... www.visitwhitby.com/rusty-shears-tea-room

Or adopt the ( perhaps uniquely Scottish? ) strategy with guests, basically, give them a decent quality drink for their first couple and then switch them on to cheap stuff thereafter. They never notice once they're a bit pished... 😈

I must be, I can *absolutely* tell the difference. Its not just lidl, quite a lot of what you call "standard branded tonics" are shit too. And a shit tonic completely ruins a G&T.

Its not just lidl, quite a lot of what you call "standard branded tonics" are shit too. And a shit tonic completely ruins a G&T. What you cant have is any "low fat" "diet" "suga free" tonics. Whatever artificial chemical they use as a replacement reacts with the gin to make it into a nasty chemical cocktail. And no flavoured tonics either. People diss it, but I rate Schweppes tonic water highly, it does still have a quinine flavour, it does enhance the gin not overpower it, and of course everyone rates fevertree. Edit, oh and buy it in small tins or bottles, it has to be freshly opened and poured. An hour later its dead only fit for the sink
