My son's 2004 Fiat Punto Active 1.2 8v has the gear selector where you pull up a collar to get it into reverse.
He was a bit rough last week in putting the car into reverse and pulled off the gear knob. Now, despite putting the knob back on, the car will not go into fifth gear. All the other gears are fine.
I suspect this is something to do with the collar and it will be booked into a garage, but does anyone have any quick fixes?
Thanks

Just the usual hatful of knob gags, I'm afraid.

I assume when you say the other gears are OK that you can get reverse OK?
If so, there is a chance that the collar is sticking in the up position somewhat, and inhibiting the move into 5th. (in reality, the collar should only inhibit reverse - when it is not lifted, but I can find (admittedly disputed) posts that the collar sticking up can inhibit the selection of fifth.
Are you sure you've reassembled correctly, with the (any) spring in the correct place?

Ha! Yes I can get all gears including reverse. However given that all I have done is put the gearknob back on, that is the limit of my re-assembly.

Take it off, put it back on carefully.
Surprising how often something will become obvious.

Well the car is now 100 miles away so I'll have to leave it to the mechanic to look at. We went for a short visit yesterday to see him at university. I did have a bit of a play but nothing was obvious and it was fading light.

...A quick look at the parts diagram doesn't show much that could have gone wrong/missing, anyway (unless there is an integral spring in the knob, not shown separately)

Not a cheap part that number 1. I'm with you, I'd try to get the knob on tighter (especially if, as I suspect, it is splined, not screwed)

Does a splined knob cost more or less than a screwed one? I'm in Amsterdam again this week so I could probably find someone to tell me.

It could just be that neither you nor indeed your son, are all that familiar with the correct operating procedure for knobs with collars? 😛
