It could just be that neither you nor indeed your son, are all that familiar with the correct operating procedure for knobs with collars? 😛 ....that could be a major or minor drawback......

You might be right, but Espdrille is not familiar either and we seemed to have worked out what to do, so it can't be all bad...
Wish I could say the same about the Punto.........

Anyway - back to gearknobs.... I found a Fiat specialist near to the centre of Birmingham and close to Birmingham City Uni (where my son goes). They had a quick look, decided a spring had gone missing when he yanked the top knob off (stop sniggering at the back ) and realised that if he pushed the collar back down properly, he could get fifth gear. So he can get all gears now, but needs to find the spring - which should be somewhere in the car.. A new gear lever is £200, as the springs are not available separately. A new top knob is £56. His is now a little cracked and the mechanic said he would have a rummage around to see if he had a spare one. I told my son to go a give the mechanic 'a drink', but as he had no cash he will have to go back. At least if he does, he can found out if a spare knob has turned up.

I love it when a knob story has a happy ending.

Don't know how I'd feel about using someone else's.

I suppose if you had the donor car's service history, you'd at least know where it had been.

Lesson learned. Tell him not to pull his knob so hard in future. Or get a passenger to do it for him...

Found a whole gear lever assembly at a scrap yard for £40 (with three month warranty) and had it fitted by my local mechanic - a three hour job as it was very fiddly, but much easier and safer than trying to separate and re-attach the top knob off the stick to replace the spring.
As you were...
