Seriously reconsidering our move to Spain at the moment. The Alicante region had 30 minutes of heavy rain today and one guy even lost a flipflop. tinyurl.com/ycnuvt77

I've looked at booking another car for Sept & Oct/Nov but all the companies I've checked so far are taking the piss. Any rental over 30 days jumps into the 1000's of €. Odd. Usually a rental over 28 days cuts the weekly price significantly... It's all a bit silly Espada. This evening I've just booked a Ford Focus (or similar) for 29 days for £190, another Focus for 21 days at £132 and another Focus for 9 days at £43. Total £365. All with the same hire company. The cheapest I could get for 59 continuous days was just over £1000 for a 2 door Fiat 500. A Focus sized car was over £1500. All I need to do is drive 30 minutes to the airport and swap the car a couple of times to save £1000.

That's crazy. Very cheap prices as well..
Do you have to pay insurance on top?

Car rental is very cheap on the Costas as long as you stick to typical holiday rental cars. Fiat Panda and the like are widely available from around 6€ per day.
As far as insurance is concerned, you get the basic CDW etc. but nothing more. They try to sell you their 'worry free super-dooper insurance' by scare tactics (tyres and underside not covered and no breakdown recovery etc. etc.) but they wanted over £10 per day when we were there a few weeks ago. My excess is covered by my credit card so I don't need it anyway. The hire company will just reserve 1400€ per rental against the card to cover any potential damage. I'll have 2800€ reserved on my card until they get the paperwork done after each car swap but that's not a problem.
If your credit card doesn't provide cover I think you can buy damage excess insurance here in the UK quite cheaply.

You can buy excess cover cheaply - you pay the excess and claim it back. You might lose out a little on exchange rates (or gain).

I use excess insurance from Quaestor. Have bought it for many years and used it in anger for the first time when I bashed the door of the Outlander I had in December. I mentioned it here. It worked; I made a claim, provided gthe documentation and they paid out in full.

I can't remember which I used but had to claim in 2006 when the car was written off by a tanker.

Back again.... Fiat Tipo 1.6 E-torque again. Still far too sluggish with an auto box. Interior is OK, boot of reasonable capacity for a saloon but the whole package is just unappealing.
Wish they had given me the i20 I ordered. A free upgrade is nice but only it it really makes your life better.

Just booked for Slovenia ski trip in Feb - Focus estate or similar with Hertz again, so I expect another Tipo 1.6 diesel manual. Which is a fine conveyance.

Parked next to a Tipo estate in Italy last week. Looked a'reet. You'd have liked it Al, it was a kind of metallic light brown.

I think mine's that colour. Browny copper. Nice colour, shame about the car.

Yes, but your own car is beige. 😈 (Says the man with the car in a fetching shade of tarmac grey.😊)
