Let me rephrase - why would a hybrid not be able to power a fag lighter socket the same as every other car?
Doubt it has anything to do with being a hybrid.

The battery that the electrics and starter circuit are powered from is not much bigger than my motorbike battery. It has a bank/banks of batteries under the rear seat but you have no access to that power source.

And the relevance between being a hybrid and not being able to push 10A through a socket is? Volvo will see your 10Amps and raise you 5. Just checked the Volvo box this evening 15A. The car from Toytown only has a 15A fuse and it blew. This suggests 15 Swedish amps are slightly more powerful than 15 Japanese spec'd Derbyshire amps.

I see they are doing a Merc e class plug in hybrid now. Only as a saloon at present but I guess they'll add the estate if it proves popular. BIK very reasonable too...

Well, that's perhaps a bit compromised, in that the battery is so tiny and the charger is so slow, in comparison to other things out there. Working out whether it could ever justify itself economically would take some careful number running, but not being a company car driver or congestion charge payer etc, there might be some comfort there. Dunno.
Looking at any hybrid, plug in or not, from the lofty pedestal of pure battery vehicle ownership, they seem not that brilliant to me. But I guess looking at them from solely ICE car owenership, they make a good stepping stone to the real thing.
I appreciate, Humph, there is at present no sensible "real thing" available that fits your use pattern. Changing all the time though, with new intereting models from various people already slated this year, and more coming all the time.
