Tomorrow, I need to be in central London between about 10.30 and 16.00. For once I don't need loads of stuff with me so I thought I'd treat myself to the train rather than drive, especially as it's a Friday and it's school holidays when the motorways are often a nightmare.
My nearest main station is 6 miles away in Crewe so would be the best option in terms of convenience. To travel on a train from there to get close to my timings would have cost £190 return! Spent a wee bit of time searching for other options and I can do the same journey starting and finishing in Stafford for £38 return. Ok so it means driving the 30 miles or so to and from Stafford, but if I nip across country, it's not busy and is actually a nice fairly scenic drive.
Quite a saving eh?
Train fares baffle me. I know it's a function of supply and demand, but blimey...😫

People will quite rightly spend a lot of money to get away from Crewe - even if only for a day. (...and yes, I have spent time there......)

It is "special", no doubt about that. But if we didn't have these little colonies here and there, where would we put all "those" people? 😉

Unfortunately I will be in Crewe tomorrow. Well the outskirts.
I should come away £300 'richer' with some vouchers for long service. That's not why I'm going but I'll probably get the vouchers tomorrow.

If it's same Virgin Pendolino/Voyager train stopping at Stafford I'd investigate the Crewe/Stafford fare.
OTOH if it's London Midland from Stafford there's a reason why it's cheap.....
Actually it's a bit of a lottery as LM have three different marks of same Class 350 train. If its a 350/1 blue seats, four abreast it's OK, if you can get seats by the loo in coach B it's actually as good as intercity. If its a 350/2, green seats 5 abreast, it's purgatory even just from London to MK. The newest 350/3, green seats 4 abreast, is half way between.

That is indeed the problem with public transport. There are always people on it. I'm not good with people. I mean, I don't mind that they exist, I just don't want to sit next to them. Neither indeed am I prejudiced about any particular group of people, it's just people in general I object to. This has been a lifetime's cross to bear you know.
I once flew to Las Vegas, ( much against my better judgement but it was work ) with various bits of a fat lady flowing out, over and under the armrest and into contact with me for the entire flight. I don't think I've ever been more disturbed for so long.

Whats the cost of Crewe - Stafford return? Maybe you can simply change trains at Stafford?

Actually, I did look at that, and it wasn't expensive, less than £20, but there wasn't really much in it in terms of travelling time by the time I'd have waited at Stafford for connections. Anyway, a drive to Stafford is in effect, only down the road.

I once flew in a small Embraer commuter jet from N Carolina to JFK, where a ginormous (but very jovial) lady poured herself into the double seat across the aisle, and then asked for the seat-belt extension (which was only just big enough despite doubling the reach). I swear that, after handing over said belt, the "flight attendant" disappeared down the steps onto the apron, and arranged the removal of some of the hold contents!

I liked the Embraer we flew on once - it was probably BA to Bologna. My wife hated such a small plane. I'd buy one tomorrow for trips to Greece if I could afford it.

To be honest, I'd never heard of an Embraer until I read it here, unless of course in colloquial reference to a resident of Scotland's capital city. For example there, the Queen's husband is commonly referred to as the "Chookie Embra"

Humph!! Embraer is exactly what was flying all over Brazil when you were there. Well, that and secondhand 737s and Fokkers which were no longer allowed in Europe.
