Still might have to get one to and from LHR or pay squillions for a taxi though.

Granted, but the Heathrow Express is rarely rammed with so many flatulent peasants that one doesn't get a seat and can't even move one's arms.

Flatulence requires food, and not many ordinary mortals can afford that and a Heathrow Express ticket.

Public transport would be fine if there weren't so many of the public on it.
And another thing, airports, they've gone downhill too, all this taking your belt and shoes off stuff.

I fly MAN - LHR occasionally, but only because I have appointments at an airport hotel. Otherwise totally pointless to fly down to LHR unless on a connecting flight out.
I hate LHR with a passion; too crowded, too much traffic so always holding when coming in to land and simply much more stressful than transferring in Frankfurt, Zurich, Brussels, Paris or Amsterdam, and I have done them all....

I used to have to do Edinburgh-Heathrow-Stuttgart pretty regularly. Horrible.

LHR? Greatly improved. Only T3 remains of the old fashioned terminals. Passing through 2, 4 and 5 now are much improved experiences. 1 is gone.
I'd happily fly LHR-MAN if it were cheaper than the train (have done once), I realise there is very little door-to-door time difference.
And I hate flying.

I like the train. I use it whenever I can rather than drive or fly.
Very relaxing and almost always straight into the centre of the city one is visiting.

Used Ataturk a few times and its worse than lhr for transferring flights. Badly laid out for a new airport. You still have to get a bus to the aircraft on quite a few of the slots. On the plus side Turkish airlines are pretty good.

Transferring is rather different from flying in or out. Frankfurt is fine as a destination but awful for transfers because the gates (especially for non-Schengen destinations) are invariably miles apart, and you're never sure when you'll encounter yet another security check.
CDG has similar problems but is at least nicer to look at. Arriving there from Santiago on Christmas Eve 2014 was one of my more enjoyable airport experiences.
LHR T2 and T5 are both perfectly adequate these days. It's hard to be much more enthusiastic about any airport.

Just flown MAN-BRU-TLV return. Admittedly not a large airport, but the time taken from getting from the top of the jetway coming off the plane, to sitting in a seat at the gate for the next flight was no more than 10 minutes, including the security check. Enough time to buy a coffee, log onto the free Wifi and get my messages, even with a 60 minute transfer gap.
At the end of August I had to fly to Luxembourg, which at the time had no MAN-LUX direct flight. So it was MAN-AMS-LUX. Although the walking distance was pretty long, it was pretty painless and again short security queues.
Last time I flew via LHR there was far too much time taken up with bussing and long queues for security.

Quite a few years ago now, I was trekking across Heathrow to catch a connecting flight. I'd been in Germany visiting a new supplier who as a welcome gift, had given me a pair of their shoes to wear.
I'd had them on all day and sadly they really didn't fit me, and by the time I had yomped half way across the the airport my feet were actually bleeding.
I'd stopped and sat down to remove them, resigned to the fact that I'd have to complete the rest of my journey in my blood stained socks, ( my other shoes were in checked baggage ) when a voice from my past caught my attention by saying "sore feet?" and I looked up into the grinning face of a guy I'd last seen when we both left school some 20 years earlier.
Of course we got to chatting and it turned out he was now "something in the city" and eventually he got around to asking what I was doing there..."Yeah, well I've spent all my working life in the quality footwear...oh wait..." 😕
