Preconditioning is not an EV only 'thing', my petrol Ford Focus has it and I'm not talking about the aftermarket Eberspächer add on you could tick on the options list order form.

Powered by battery, or does it run the engine? Pretty sure the latter would be illegal in the UK.

It's only illegal in the UK if you have to leave the car unattended with the key in the ignition.
The app starts the engine remotely. You must have the key with you to unlock the doors to get in. You then have to press the brake pedal and the start button before the selector will unlock and allow you to move into drive. If you've broken into the car and do not have the key you cannot unlock the selector.

Not sure the Highway Code would agree — although you might make a case for a driveway not being a highway.
Rule 123 The driver and the environment. You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.

Given the car has a heated windscreen which clears faster than the door mirrors or rear screen I'm talking maybe two minutes or the time it takes to put a pair of shoes on, pick up my jacket and rucksack and walk out the front door.
All that wasted heat from the engine means I feel warm air coming through the vents 50m down the road.

I always thought that you were right Dubya but a post I made on another forum shot me down; lots of people with Range Rovers (obvs), taking about remote starts at their country pile and it wasn't illegal as it was off the highway. Being Range Rover drivers of course, the idea that burning fuel for no good reason is bad for the environment hadn't occured to them.

Our EV when preconditioningit in winter is the equivalent of running 3x850W microwaves for 20 minutes. It even pings when it's ready.

It’s energy you’ll have to expend anyway to clear the windows, and there’s no waste engine heat to do it. So moving off doesn’t help, as it does in a petrol car, and you might as well expend the energy while the car is plugged it and you’re still enjoying your Knackwurst.

Don't have windows to clear, we have a little house for the EV, called a garage. The EV really doesn't like freezing cold weather so the fossil fuels have to live out in the elements.

OK. But 0.85 kWh is hardly a big deal when you do need it.
