Sorry. Been at a surveyors lunch... Two pints of IPA and now I'm on a bus home..
I was thinking, regretfully, of a small SUV along the likes of the Captur but with better materials and a stronger engine.
Until recently the answer was obviously a Golf but the way cars are designed now, I think something slightly more sitty uppy, especially with reduced mobility, works better.
Seat Ateca? Buying now would involve the question of auto vs manual and then DSG....
The Citroen C3 we rented over Christmas was pretty good in meeting those requirements as well and is not sitty uppy at all.
Strangely the Focus Mk1 was designed with the reduced mobility in mind I recall. Big doors, bit buttons, clear controls.

Yes, Ford put people in fat suits to test it, didn’t they? But you wouldn’t buy a sitty-uppy car now just in case you had mobility problems in 12 years’ time. That’s an awful lot of unnecessary air to push out of the way in the meantime.

I think the SUV will be around for some time replacing the traditional hatchback whatever we may think.
Interesting a few small SUVs have been mentioned though not the Volvo EX30.

Until fairly recently a lot of PSA cars that were automatic had a torque converter auto (8 speed). But the mild hybrids now have a DCT with the electric motor housed in the gearbox. Maybe some are still TCs?

Not that it’s a plan or ambition or anything approaching either, but I suspect that we’ll keep the little Jeep for a long time. It’s still a relatively uncomplicated and simple car that should be easy enough to keep going with. And, “she” loves it.

I assume the Jeep is a manual but I'm not sure I want a turbo charged engine medium to long term out of warranty.
What I had not considered when choosing a car was chain vs. belt for cam timing. Could be costly to replace the chain on a Mazda petrol engine.

Oh y’know, sometimes it’s ok to live on the edge a bit. 😉

My Mazda6 diesel was also built in Japan. The poorly designed DPF solution meant oil levels would rise in the engine. They don't get everything right.

True but petrol engines are absolutely their forte. A properly serviced Mazda engine should last longer than the rest of the car.
