Excellent misrepresentation of my point How so? You referred to the need to keep a car in near-constant use to keep it from deteriorating. I pointed out that this applies mainly to old-tech machinery with multiple systems and moving parts (although, clearly, nothing thrives on complete neglect.) An EV really does take most of these problems away. It's a much easier machine to live with, most of the time.

The CLS has had three outings in three days, the latest being to Heathrow T2 to collect Boy2's lovely American girlfriend (plus the biggest Samsonite you've ever seen) on her way to resume studies in York. That luggage, plus three people, was not going to be a comfortable fit in the i3, which would otherwise have been perfect for the job.
The others were to ensure that the car would start after its Christmas lay-up. It was a little reluctant to start on Tuesday - possibly because it knew it was a glamour-free run to the tip - but it got going after I'd turned off the Comand screen. It's since had about 130 miles over three days and seems happy - even stop-starting a few times - although I'm going to have to keep inventing missions for it until the threat of cold weather is over, or I make a decision on its future with us.

You've never seen luggage till you've travelled with a Yank. They seem to have double our standard allowance and still need more.

My turn. I've been trying to keep the Corolla battery alive by plugging the charger/maintainer in regularly over the winter. I took it out for a run about 2 weeks ago to put some petrol in it and keep the moving parts, er, moving. Started on the button, all good. Just went out to connect the maintainer this morning due to the low temps over recent days, and on unlocking the car noticed the central locking didn't function. Balls. Key in ignition (remember cars like that?), turn, absolutely nothing. Oh well, battery just needs a charge, right? Nope. The maintainer flashed up "Fault" straight away. So it's dead. Balls. Checked cheapest possible battery from my usual supplier, Tayna - £42 plus £8 for delivery. Carparts4less showed one at £47 for collection at my local eurocarparts, (including discount code from a recent email), so I went with them. I checked buycarparts.co.uk, they had nothing under £63, excluding delivery, and even then they were all out of stock.
Hey ho. Bit cheaper than an AGM for a CLS.
Have now connected the maintainer to the Civic. That had a new battery in it during the winter Covid lockdown, after it died whilst I had the windows wound down to air it, after having found mould on the seats (subsequently found the cause of that was a loose door seal right by where I found the mould, which has now been fixed by using some silicone sealant).
I definitely have too many cars here. Now daughter (just turned 15) has decided she wants a green VW Beetle when the time comes (new shape, well the "new" one launched around year 2000 or so). She may well be getting a red Corolla.

Mildly surprised that it’s not getting used by your son to learn in? Is he still wanting to?

I keep seeing a green Corolla round here and wondering if it’s the one you rejected in favour of the red one.
I have another mission to Oxford today. The CLS had a good run on Monday but I suppose it would be wise to take it again, especially as it’s not likely to be required this weekend.

He started in Dec 21/Jan22 when he turned 17, then he had a nasty physical medical problem (surgery involved) which knocked him out for a while. He hasn't picked it up again since recovering, mainly because he's a bit short on free time, as he is doing IB rather than A Level (which means hardly any free periods - which is when a lot of U6ers take lessons), is in school 8am-6pm and still has homework/study in the evenings and weekends. He's really studying hard because he's determined to achieve grades which will hopefully gain him access to Medicine at University (I have huge doubts about this, both because I don't think he'll be offered a place and because I don't think it's a particularly pleasant career to choose at the moment, but that's another story). So I'm disinclined to nag him about driving as he's up against it academically. He still wants to learn, and he's intending to pick it up after exams in May. I thin when the mornings and evenings get lighter again, I'll get him to drive to and from school.

I think it was a 1.6 though, so I favoured the lower insurance group of the 1.4. Still see a fair few of the same shape pottering about town here. One of those cockroach cars, like the K11 Micra. I'm hoping it is just a bad battery and there isn't a drain issue somewhere. But given it's only on 57k miles, and has only done a tanksworth of miles since November 2021, I'm fairly confident the battery has just given up from lack of use. I checked the interior light switch was in the right position this morning though...

It doesn’t have to be too pressured Al, we found it was really about just getting my son to drive whenever he would normally have needed a lift.

Yeah true enough. He doesn't do much but go to school sadly, but yes I do need to start doing that with him when opportunity presents.

I'm ready to tempt fate by saying that my battery concern is over, at least for this winter. I took the CLS to my class yesterday, because it hadn't moved since reaching 60,000 miles eleven days before, and because it was the kind of breezy evening that prevents dew settling and obviates the i3's best trick of preconditioning for home time. The app reported a battery voltage of 13.6V, that rose to 14.5V by the end of my road and stayed there till I got to Bracknell 38 minutes later. Engine started on the first turn, of course. Similar voltage story for the return, despite lights, seat heater and full CC comforts.
We may yet get another spell of deep chill, but the battery recovered from the previous one and will recover again. I think it's fine, and I'll keep running it every week or so to keep it that way.
