Test drove the Scenic.
It's fine, drove well, was quiet but not wow in the way the Ionic 5 was when I first drove it and again like the Explorer I thought I sat low in the cabin which was dark and the A pillars felt very close and obscured my vision. Some very nice features and for a typical family car I think it is very good, but I can do better.
Keep coming back to another Ioniq 5, first time I have had the same car one after the other if I go down that road. But also keep thinking about the Alfa Junior, despite the range of only 250 miles. Apart from probably a few days a year, the range is irrelevant.

5000 miles over two years? I’d be looking hard at the excess mileage charges on that deal!
ID7 looks decent on paper, the least disappointing of the iD designs. But VW has so comprehensively failed the EV test that I’d want a good long drive in one before deciding.

Seems cheap until you pay the excess mileage rate I guess.

It’s already 66p a mile before you put fuel in it or insure/tax it.

Blimey lads, I do know all that, there's a calculator on there if you want to have it for more than 5k miles a year. It's a just a link, not a Command Set in Tablets of Stone from Mount Whateveritwas.
I'm just suggesting the model to EspIII, as a possible replacement for the I5, and there might be tempting deals to be had on it at a suitable mileage for him.

but not wow in the way the Ionic 5 was when I first drove it You need to set that aside as you will never experience that again. Going from a turbo diesel to electric then electric to electric will not have the same impact. Probably easier if you have a list of must haves, nice to have and absolutely nots for your next car.

It’s already 66p a mile before you put fuel in it or insure/tax it. Ah yes, tax. That dreaded annual demand for zero pounds and nought new pence. But I suppose you can take the instalment option if you don’t mind paying 5 percent extra. 😛 I did misread the 5,000 as a total allowance rather than the annual it is. But Humph has missed the hefty upfront amount, so it’s more like 90p for each of those 10,000 miles. But ownership of any new or newish car looks expensive if you view it that way, because any new car is expensive.

Funnily enough I stumbled across the iD7 last night online. Car called it 'the best VW EV so far'.
Certainly has the presence and space I want and the range. Also the interior is a bit more logical than other VAG EV offerings, although the I5 is in my opinion, spot on in that regard. Not stupidly expensive either although the level of standard kit will determine if it becomes sensible or not after adding in any options packs. I think a heat pump is an option whereas it is standard on the I5 now and the Scenic. Anyway I will add it to the cars to inspect; a list that is not that long.
Still thinking about the Alfa Junior. It comes back to the comment I made to Al about buying the car for 95% of the time you will use it, not the other 5%. The Junior is too small for some trips, but they are probably once or twice a year and actually not so far that using a taxi wouldn't be a sensible alternative. The Kia EV3 is yet to be looked over.

Zero VED at the moment but that will become £190 like petrol and diesel cars soon enough. And if it cost more than £40k when new and it less than 5 years old there's the 'expensive car' tax to add to that. So from next April you'll be paying £600 for your VED because it will be classed as an 'expensive car' thus an extra £410. Assuming that the £190 rate and the £410 rate do not go up next April.
And I suppose if the i3 is less than 5 years old and cost over £40k when new, that's going to be another £600pa for VED.
The £40k for 'expensive cars' really needs to go up a lot.

Additional rate (expensive car supplement) For new electric vehicles with a list price exceeding £40,000, you will now need to pay the expensive car supplement from the second tax payment onwards. This applies to vehicles registered on or after 1 April 2025.

Okay you'll only pay £190 x 2 then. But you said about zero tax which isn't quite the case going forward. You'll be paying the same as my 2.5l petrol car. Seems fair enough to me though because it's a tax to pay for the roads. I already pay fuel duty to cover the use of a polluting car. And heavy EVs should perhaps pay a bit more because they cause more damage to road surfaces??

Officially VED is a tax on vehicles and some of it is meant to go on infrastructure projects like maintaining roads, building new roads, tunnels, etc. In reality it goes straight into the central pot.
But if I have to pay VED to have a car on the road then so should someone driving (a heavier) EV.
But officially some of the VED payment is for roads. Are you doing this on purpose??
You haven't commented on your zero tax comment for VED yet though. That changes after April 2025. Presumably it will be around July 2025 when the iX needs VED paying. Presumably you could 'fiddle' what is paid for the i3.
