Ah, I think 'air spring' might be the part I'm after. They seem to be about £250 plus fitting.
Of course it might be something else, will have to wait and see.

I had a self-leveling rear shock absorber fail on my S-Max (the only failure it suffered in five years). The cost was about £295 + VAT and fitting. It only had that type due to the Xenon headlights. so you may have the same issue.

Yes. It's nothing to do with air suspension or air springs. (And the E has separate levellers for its xenon headlights; you can see them do a test waggle when the lights come on.)

Sorry WDB, you've lost me. What is it to do with then in your opinion?

My ignorance, in part. The full adaptive air suspension option is called Airmatic and uses air springs on all four wheels, but is confined to the top models like the E500, not for the likes of us. But all S211s (estates, that is) have pneumatic (not hydraulic, as I thought) self-levellers at the back, with a single, central level sensor. There seems to be an engine-driven compressor that feeds both reservoirs, but the reservoirs themselves can develop holes or cracks, presumably from ageing. Could be what you're observing, maybe exacerbated by some unintentional rough treatment.

If you wanted to buy one of the items in bold above as a spare part, what would you search for on the internet? What does one look like and where is it on the car?

Sorry, I'm an IT monkey and I've only ever worked on the clean fingernails side of that. I don't buy secondhand parts and I eventually give up on cars that need too many new ones. I'd just ask the mechanic who's going to fit it what it costs and leave him to find one, not that I've needed more than brake discs and a thermostat so far.
People on MB forums seem to call them air springs or airbags - although both offer the likelihood of confusion with parts of other systems. I'd be asking a specialist.

Try some washing up liquid and water and spray it on everything that carries the air and look for leaks when it's up and running.

One side (rear only) always lower by 2cm.

That might be the one but I'm unclear as to whether that one is for standard models or 'Airmatic' models.

I don't think it'll be an airbag leak then. I've not had this on a Merc, but my BMW 5 Series estate had similar.
Each side has a sensor I think. My guess is one of those is bent / moved / or something.

I think the £290 is the one you want, the 300 and something was the airmatic one.
*if* you want a bag at all.
