I'd care. But that might be a genetic thing. 🤔

Maybe. That genetic half of me is being overridden by my Maltese genetic half possibly. But the half you refer to will be in full voice down the pub tomorrow getting its own back. And not caring too much if it's £3 or £4 for a pint. Rissoles. For tea.

I'm not so glum about that era of SAAB. What makes that model nasty? I confess I've not driven one, but you could feel the GM accountants biting by 2008. Remember that I had the previous, hatchback 9-3, which did a good job of hiding its GM ancestry, especially inside. The 2003 car got off on the wrong foot by using a semicircular speedometer; those were last seen in Vauxhalls of the 1990s and ate just wrong. Then there was a facelift around 2006 that just made it look and feel more even more low-rent Vauxhall, rather than proper Swedish Saab. The last one I rode in was a station taxi. Compared with an E220 of similar age, it felt ready to fall apart. Maybe that was more to do with it being a station taxi than being a SAAB. I've been in a few Merc taxis which weren't exactly fresh out of the box.
I'll probably have a look at this one, after all I can almost see the dealer's site from the office window I'm sitting at right now. Nothing to lose.

Is an unmarried person from Malta a single malt?
As you were, back to gas guzzlers...

I'll ask when I go to apply for citizenship and a passport in the near future.

I'd have that Saab in a heartbeat. The V50 looks like something that was designed to be bigger and then shrank in the wash. Nasty looking thing and though I've only ever been in one briefly, also nasty to be in. I like V70s very much, but older V70s are only ever cheap for a reason. Now mostly that reason is cheap to fix, if you do it yourself, but you don't so it won't be.
MPG / Fuel type / whatever totally irrelevant on that mileage.
The goal is a car that the Lady likes, believes in and will accept as being her choice. All that nasty right/wrong logic stuff is worthless and irrelevant.
p.s. I've always rather liked Vauxhalls, so the Saab being reminiscent of one, which I don't think it actually is, is hardly a downside.

I bought a new V50 about 12 years ago. Lovely car, but it was rather small. Even though it's an estate, the S60 that preceded it seemed to accommodate more luggage on family trips. Bigger, more comfy seats in the S60/V70 too...

You've found some nice-looking cars, Al, but let's be realistic: anything 10 years old or more might be a money pit. All those complex components about to have a late mid-life crisis...
Don't the bangernomics experts say that you're better off spending 1500 quid and banking the rest of the budget? The car can then be scrapped if an uneconomic repair bill slaps you in the face.

Don't the bangernomics experts say...? Yes. They also say that you shouldn't get hung up on looking for hard-to-find features like automatic transmission and a camelskin interior. I'm guessing Vić's face is close to blue already with that line of reasoning.

WDB has it right. V50 might well do the trick and get you into a nice T5 to boot....

Some of us were out all day and don’t - or didn’t - know the result.
