Most buyers don’t buy cars upfront these days; it’s all leasing, HP or PCP. If their next car costs 50 quid a month more over 3 years with a bigger balloon payment at the end will they notice or even care? I'd probably agree with you if 50/month was all it was. That Golf needs a 13k deposit and 550/month over four years for 6,500 miles/year. I think increases on everything else (interest rates, gas, electric, oil, fuel, food, council tax...) will hit the brakes hard on new car sales.

No! We know the wheels are awful but the wood inside would have Espadrille running to the divorce court... and what the heck are those lumpy bits on the front bumper? Fake parking sensors??? Ugh

Or perhaps a special edition for people who don’t like daylight for some inexplicable reason. I’m parked up checking emails and fannying about on here at this very moment as it happens. Sunroof open and it’s lovely. 😎

The thing that is powering car sales at the moment is the fact that all these car leases are coming to an end. They may permit another year, like my physiotherapist said last week; her Hyundai Tuscon will be five years old in November. It was on a four year lease and extended it by a year. But she is a single woman who drives to London a lot and wants a reliable car. She is afraid (I wouldn't be) of breaking down so wants a car with a warranty.
So she realises that in order to get a new car in time for the old one being returned she needs to order it now... A lot of people in her position I reckon. If she owned the car, she may well have a different view. I wouldn't take the Punto on a long journey but I would have no quibbles in doing so in the seven year old Captur. In fact on Sunday it did Manchester to Southampton and back in a day for the FA Cup. Probably did it a world of good.

Attitudes to mileage, whether it’s the number accrued on the odometer or the journey to be done, vary greatly don’t they?

…those lumpy bits on the front bumper? Fake parking sensors? Unlikely. It has real parking sensors (the more widely spaced lumps in both bumpers) as did my E of that period. These bumps seem to light up too. Never seen that but they look somehow intentional. No idea! No clues in the dealer’s spec listing either. But it does have ‘safety belts’, which is nice. Further thought: aftermarket LED Tagfahrleuchten?

I'd jump in my 11 year old Volvo and drive it to Italy or Scotland tonight, it depends on how much of a known quantity the car is and how well it has been maintained.
I noticed Volvo at the last service did not renew the annual breakdown cover, the car going over 10 before the next service. I have never used the recovery service, removing that insurance removes the need for main dealer servicing for me. Yes, it was an expensive oil change, throw in 'free' breakdown cover and it became an acceptable cost.
They've also pulled downloadable map updates.
The car has covered <90k miles and the manufacturer has pretty much withdrawn all backup services. If I can buy genuine parts over the counter and fit them myself or get the local workshop to do it the main dealer workshop is going to be left with prepaid 3 year PCP servicing for the bulk of its work.

Yes, I feel much the same confidence in my eight-year-old Mercedes. The thing most likely to leave me stranded is a damaged tyre or wheel, and that’s as likely on a new car as an old one.
While I empathise with the lone-female-driver concern, I don’t quite see what warranty has to do with it. That’s more about financial reassurance than personal safety or day-to-day reliability. It doesn’t prevent a breakdown, just picks up the pieces afterwards. I’d choose to keep the amount I might be paying on a PCP and use it to self-insure against any non-routine items, and spend a little on good roadside assistance cover just in case.

The car industry relies in part on attitudes formed at a time when vehicles didn’t have a fraction of their current potential longevity.
A sixties car with 100,000 miles or ten years under its belt was tired. A well maintained 21st century one with similar usage is probably good to do it all over again, and then some.

Further thought: aftermarket LED Tagfahrleuchten? Bolting aftermarket parts onto cars, (or painting the wheels black as in this case) just doesn’t do it any aesthetic favours, it may well be an attempt to improve its looks, but a bit like naff “private” number plates it has the absolute opposite effect and only serves to devalue a vehicle’s appeal. Tommy Tryhard is alive and well it seems. 😉

It seems that a lot of people want a car that shouts “Look at Me” 😬😖

Counter intuitively, I quite like that.
But I just wouldn’t buy it.
