You’ll be able to regale us with stories of who you’ve had in the back and so on… 😬

The same could apply to an Avensis (I saw a 1999 one near here on Sunday and thought of Vić) but I would choose the Mondeo over that every time. But I wouldn’t actually choose either, as i wouldn’t want to be reliant on a 15-year-old car.

Well I'm not going to be day-to-day, I'm reliant on a very reliable 5 year old BEV, which has even proved itself capable recently of doing fairly long journeys quite easily. I can no longer afford to be throwing money at a car which does very little month after month, and beggars can't be choosers. I don't have the luxury of too much choice.

Keep the Honda Al. Think of another way of saving money. An old car is not something you should put what is currently a bit of a wedge to you into. Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten and all that malarkey.

I have, in all seriousness, investigated other avenues, and I'll be squeezed in the near future further with certain cost of living increases. I'm also running the car for the lad now remember. I know, this shall pass, in the next couple of years, and do you know what, when it does, if I want to buy something newer and better, I will do that then. In the meantime, I haven't got much more belt tightening I can do. I do have disposable income each month, but I do enjoy some other things like socialising, takeaways, gigs, sports fixtures, holidays etc which I would like to do particularly given the restrictons we've suffered for the last 2 years. If that means a bit of a car downgrade, that that's that. It's called prioritising and budgeting, things I think men of our age and responsibilities are probably familiar with.

Then…you know what I’d do?
Go for something super cheap, emergency/occasional use only sort of thing, hang the preferred automatic etc and just get a banger that isn’t banging all that loudly yet.
Go for something cheap with north of 100,000 miles but with a great service history. Put it to Mrs A that for now it’s a necessary evil, and that while you will endeavour never to trouble her with the inconvenience of changing gears, she might just have to do that now and then in circs exceptional.
Women of a certain age can also be quite reasonable if they have to be.

I like the building site.... very classy way of advertising the car.. The dealer has a forecourt, and a storage facility elsewhere. I expect the storage facility is next to the current building site. Photos of most of their stock is taken on their forecourt. I can't say I'm overly worried about that. I know there's a lot of development going on in that area at the moment. www.wokinghamcarsltd.co.uk/

But, now that you have…🤔 Circumstances have changed somewhat, and I'd have another 3 years plus of monthlies to pay off the Honda now. When in a hole, stop digging? Which can apply both to the never ending bills on the Merc back then, and the payments for the Honda now. You may not remember but I had a limp mode problem requiring a new turbo, and also leaking injectors, when I ditched the Merc. About £3k of work IIRC. Of course there are no risk free answers to this.

Well, there might be. Sell the Civic if you need/want to and rely on the Corolla as back up for now. Give yourself a payment holiday and put some cash in the bank.

I'm starting to think what I might need car wise, at least short term, when the 330e goes back soon. I'd like to think sooner rather than later I might get out of the UK but in reality I might need a car for a few months. And there's the problem - buying high and then when not needed selling it at a loss. But that's probably cheaper than doing a few car hires for the longer journeys.
Maybe I need to 'borrow/rent' something from somewhere/someone for a short while??
