Well it was inevitable but the Mondeo is being phased out. Maybe they could have continued with the name on some sort of vehicle? I wonder what this means for the other models sharing the platform like the Galaxy?

Well, I was probably never going to buy another one, except maybe for one of our sales reps, so I can't mourn it too much. But, they were great cars that never quite got the recognition they deserved. Just did everything really well and managed to be an enjoyable drive too.

I think we're already there. Well not me. For starters my car is even a saloon - how unconventional

Gah. SUV-world here we come. EV-World is a more hopeful interpretation. EVs don’t lend themselves so well to the three-box layout as the batteries need space that’s best put below the floor. 30 years isn’t a bad run for the Mondeo. It lasted longer than the Cortina, which I used to think had been around for ever.

I still don't want an SUV, even an EV one. Might end up with one of the benigthed things of course.

That's a risk too far for me.

Well "she" loves it, in fact she's just come back home in it a few minutes ago and made a point of saying just that. So, that'll do for me.
Interesting if not all that relevant maybe, that my 21 year old son and my 84 year old father in law both like it too.
I've still got my German taxi for everything else. I'll post something fun on the Yank thread if I can find it...

The first Volvo (excluding the Polestar) that is available as a BEV is of course the XC40. You'd think it's because the platform has space low down for batteries since it's an SUV. But the batteries are in the transmission tunnel. So it could have been lower to the ground.
The upcoming C40 is a bit sleeker but still not as low to the ground as a traditional hatchback.
I must be the only one that found the Mondeo uncomfortable. Well my wife did too. She would have back pain after a lock journey and unfortunately I had the thing for 4 years. And in that time it went through 2 EGR valves with one causing the car to breakdown. And all the doors were rusted at the bottom - a known problem.

But the batteries are in the transmission tunnel. So it could have been lower to the ground. Available as a BEV but not designed as one, so there's a lot of wasted height. The 'skateboard' platform of a true BEV puts everything much lower, with benefits for stability as well as space-efficiency.

I think the point I was trying to make is people say BEVs are often SUV style because of the batteries and that's not the case. A Tesla shows you can put them very low done in the 'skateboard' platform and the XC40 has them in the transmission tunnel - so it didn't need to be an SUV.
But we all know they are popular.

The weight needs to be low down because there’s so much of it! All those batteries aren’t light.
