Er, yes, which is why as I'm (possibly) selling and buying, it makes no difference overall. The car I'm selling is fetching more than it would have, the one I might buy is more expensive than it would have been, but the difference between the 2 is roughly the same, so it makes no difference to me. The only people suffering are those without a car to sell but need to buy one.

Back to thinking about driving and learning. The Aygo I bought in 2021 has helped to solve one problem - and in the process created another. Boy1 has thoroughly cracked both competence and confidence. Practising manoeuvres with me helped him get ready for his test, and having easy access to the car since - especially with his GF insured to drive it too, so they can use it for trips together - has helped him over the line into simply being a person who drives.
Problem solved? Yes, but there's another one. The idea was that Boy2 could use the Aygo too, but now he's in York, the car is getting regular use around Cambridge and it might prove difficult to prise it away - especially now that Boy1 has spent his own money on some brake parts his garage said were required for the MoT. Boy2 shows no strong inclination to learn - but he also wants to do a work placement later in the year, and a driving licence might be a distinct advantage there, especially if he's working outside London. And no, I don't think the solution is another Aygo.

Reckon there’s a Corolla available near you. Might want a new battery mind… 😉

Bit big for the space on my drive. But maybe a bigger car would suit Cambridge duties, while the Aygo could return here, at least for the summer.

Coincidentally, I used the Aygo last night for a quick cross country dash when I went for a swim. Only because it was the only car on the drive that had been used recently enough yesterday not to have a covering of snow on it. Every time I drive that little car I have fun for some reason. Quite a giggle on untreated snowy roads. Felt like a rally driver. Well, a cautious rally driver anyway!

Aye well you might have the germ of a plan there, bigger car for #1 and Aygo for #2 maybe? Although short term, given locations, maybe just stump for some driving lessons in York for now?

Sounds like you need to find about £2.5k or so for a decent (larger) snotter for the older boy, and bring the Aygo back home for number 2.

We have plenty of parking available at our house, and a garage too. (One of the few advantages of living in the impoverished North I suppose) We can get 8 vehicles on the drive easily.
My son has recently unsolicitedly mentioned that he quite fancies building a Westfield or similar.
Trouble is, from my side, he’s pushing against an open-ish door…

Something I need to think about this year, daughter is 17 next week. I can't take her out on the roads here, not allowed. I can hire a private track and teach her separately from an instructor but at 2k€ instruction what an I paying them for then ?
Michael Schumacher kart track is local. I'll take her there separate from driving instruction. After that there is no way on earth I am getting in a car with her. My youngest son has a level of self preservation my daughter does not possess.

How old is it ? If less than ten years then it would be good for the engine, never really getting the chance to cold cycle. I'd be insisting on a new driver's seat though, all those sweaty backs and bottom burps 🤢🤢🤢🤮

I’ve taken a few cars up to 200,000 miles without any major problems, but never much beyond that. I do wonder though if it might be quite possible to do way more than that with proper maintenance. Vans and trucks often seem to go on a lot longer. I’m tempted to try with my current car, the fairly ubiquitous 2.1 diesel engine in it should be good for a few more miles. I’m mentally prepared to replace it at a moment’s notice if required, but I’m becoming curious now as to how far I can take it.
Edit - 53.3 mpg yesterday on a 150 miles round trip.

Embrace your inner Irv Gordon, he did 3.2 million miles in a Volvo P1800. I think by that stage the engine had 2 or 3 rebuilds and support from Volvo as a PR exercise.
My old S60 D5 is over 281,000 at the last MOT, my current S60 is barely run in at 92,000 miles.
