One of my old Mondeo TDCi estates is still showing as MOTd. It’s a 2002 model and had 369,000 on it at its last test. I sold it at about 190,000 from memory.

How old is it ? If less than ten years then it would be good for the engine, never really getting the chance to cold cycle. I'd be insisting on a new driver's seat though, all those sweaty backs and bottom burps 🤢🤢🤢🤮 First registration November 2014.

What's that 98 months ? 10,000kms/month every month. That engine has not really had a chance to cool down except maybe for an oil and filter change.
Taxi or drug mule? 😁

I've had a wee look at some of my former vehicles, the highest mileage I've found so far is my 2004 Touran (1.9tdi manual) at 222,606 then it dies in 2017. The 2008 Touran (2.0tdi DSG) is still going and only on 72k. My Laguna (58 reg 2.0dci) is still going at 150k miles. So maybe I was hasty getting shot of that. One of my Mazda 6s (55 plate 2.0 petrol auto) is still only on 55k but the last MOT is a massive list of rot and rust, so probably going in the bin this year. The other 6 (06 reg 2.0 petrol auto) expired on 118k, again loads of rust on its last MOT. The old Golf (1.9tdi auto 02 reg) is soldiering on at 150k miles. Disappointed to see my Stilo binned at 10 years old with only 92k on the clock. Looks like my SAAB 9-5 (2.2tid auto) lasted only one MOT and about 5k miles after I traded it in 9137k final mileage). The E is still around, but only doing 2k miles a year and has only done 5k since I got shot. I wonder if they've had the turbo and injectors sorted. First Leaf has only done a couple of thou since trade in, no surprises there for a car with a 90 mile range. Long term then looks like VW and Renault products have the edge for longevity and value for money, even over vaunted paragons like Mazda and Benz. I could easily dig back further but even I have to do some work occasionally.

Taxi or drug mule? 😁 Well it's black and the number plates have been removed, so maybe the latter. I don't think you'd buy a Scout as a taxi, rather than the standard estate. Higher buy price, higher running cost, for no return. You don't see anyone running SUVs as taxis, nor jacked up (i.e. ruined) versions of proper cars either. But the mule theory, well, maybe the odd cross country adventure...

If it's for sale in Chermany the plates belong to the registered keeper not the vehicle is why there are no plates. Maybe the tax was/is due and the seller does not want to pay a full year tax then wait for a refund when it sells.
Every time the vehicle changes registered keeper it will usually change number plate. It's only recently you've been able to keep a plate if you move regions. Previously, if you moved from Cologne to Bonn you'd have to change plates from K-xx nnnn to BN-xx nnnn.
Switzerland has the best solution in my view, the registered keeper has one set of plates. One lot of tax and insurance as you can only drive one car at a time.

Not like there's much time for low-speed manoeuvring anyway.

Cate Blanchett's mad-conductor film Tár is mostly set in Berlin (with some fabulous interiors too) but her product-placed Taycan - which looks brand new - has an S-for-Stuttgart registration. Taken straight from the Porsche press fleet, hoping nobody would notice? (She has a product-placed Atoma notebook too. Those I like - and can afford!)

Yes, companies usually reserve a number of plates to register the vehicles.
Some smaller companies personalise the plates or use sequential numbers so they know who's in which vehicle.
Personalised plates usually have initials and dates (day and month or month and year) kind of thing.
The single use of the number 1 on a plate usually indicates some dignitary e.g. a mayor of a city.

A YouTuber bought a large Dodge pickup which had done just under one million miles.
It had been used by a business and was well maintained. Its overall condition was very good given the mileage. But... It had had, I think, at least two gearbox rebuilds and in the usual American way, the engine had been played with with non-stock air filter and other 'improvements'.
But it does show that with suitable maintenance a vehicle can last, but at some point you enter bangernomics territory and you have to make choice between heavy maintenance or replacing the whole vehicle. It will depend upon many factors, including condition of the body, interior and other parts that do not yet need attention.

Given the software faults I've seen in the last couple of months SNAFU is something I'd rather avoid and stick with my twelve year old car for some time yet.
The two 2020 cars we have with the app updates which always seem to need an element of interference to make work after update, I'm entering the CBA phase of ownership and will start to delete apps that don't work. I'm not an unpaid beta developer.

For people of our age, the whole world is becoming CBA. Too many things to remember, confirm etc etc. I must have dealt with about five 'know you customer requests' from banks in the last six months. And if you don't give the right answers inte right time the account will be suspended or closed with no access to your money.
No wonder people want to deal in cash or bitcoin.

Well I ended up in a Vauxhall Grandland X over the weekend, on a taxi journey. I was a bit disappointed with it, because I actually quite like the look of these cars from the outside, but inside it felt really cheap, the seats were seemingly made from cardboard, and the ride. Well, the ride was atrocious. If SUVs are supposed to be more comfortable for passengers then they've missed the target by a country mile with these. I couldn't wait to get out of it. Maybe it's just me but it rode like the Nissan Jukes I've had as courtesy cars, which you may recall I've been highly critical of. My Grandland experience yesterday has just served to reinforce my own personal feeling at SUVs are absolutely not for me. Just nasty in every possible way.

Astras are fine. I've been in plenty. But when you ruin one by turning it into an SUV, you end up with an appalling ride. Insignias are even better, they are very comfortable to ride in and pretty decent to drive. Also because they aren't 3 feet further off the ground than they need to be. See also my Leaf riding 1000% better than a Juke.
