Or you could buy a very nice ten year old reliable E350CDi estate in a dodgy matallic beige colour. It no longer leans either!

I very much doubt you'd accept £3k for it? That's about my limit.

I would consider myself to be charitable but that does stretch my definition a little....

Exactly why I won't be dipping my toe in E Class ownership again, I can't afford a good one. Well, I can, but I don't want to as it won't get used much. On the contrary I can get what I consider to be a good Mondeo for £3k, which doesn't harbour as much potential for wallet emptying disasters as an old E.

Ah but, it’s not just an E Class, it’s an almost brown E Class... 🤪

Talking about not using it that much, I had mine MoT'd on Tuesday. Passed it with flying colours (obvs), but what was surprising was that I had done 10,200 miles since the last MoT, far more than my usual annual mileage of about just over 8,000. I can only put this down to spending far less time out of the country, therefore working more and doing more recreational trips than usual.

Mentioned a green Nissan Almera on another thread. I'm sure you're all dying to see it: www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108075957083I am reticent, however, because it's non-ULEZ compliant. The 1.5 from 2001 onwards appears to be compliant, so maybe better to wait for a similarly pristine example to come up which is slightly newer. Something like this but preferably from from a private seller at this end of themarket: www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202009183880181I am very tempted by the prospect of a model which not only the lad likes, but is attainable in apparently reasonable condition for under £1k, due to its unfashionability.

You really just need it to go and to be insurable, don’t you? That was the reasoning that led me to the Aygo. The thing I’m noticing most about an old, cheap car (the Aygo is 11 years old) is that it feels old and cheap. But everything works — even the air conditioning— so it’s OK. If you’re going for something even older, having everything working — emissions included — is even more important.

Go, be insurable, satisfy me that it's safe enough, and not be an "embarrassment" to a teenager, according to the denfintion of embarrassment in the specific teenager's opinion.

If it is, it’s the same typo in two places.

Really not a good time to be buying a car. Can you hang on for a few months Al? Maybe just maybe in the depths of winter the market might cool down a bit..?

Whilst it's not a good time to buy, it's a great time to sell. So it doesn't really make any difference to me. The local Honda dealer is chasing me like mad to buy my Civic.

Eh?! It is indeed a great time to sell, but not to buy. Didn’t Humph say as much in the other thread? Your “profit” on selling is immediately devoured when you pay the inflated price of your next purchase!
