I’m paying £2000 for a car 11 years old. This one is twice that age. Is the mk1 Focus an appreciating classic now? Even in unlovely saloon form?

It will be soon. Especially in lovely saloon form. And beige.
Anyway, there isn't a linear relationship between the value of all cars and their age. And this is from a dealer, yours is a private sale from a personal contact. It's not really apples and apples. Also, a mk1 Focus is a car, not a tumble dryer.
If you were to line up your Aygo and this Focus in front of me, both with £2000 on the screen, I'd buy the Focus. You wouldn't. Diff'rent strokes, innit.

The Focus wouldn’t fit the space on my drive. I like the Focus — more than I like the Mondeo — and it was a groundbreaking design in 1998, but the hatch is the standout model, so I’ll leave this one to you. 🤠

I'm finding it hard to come up with the right words to describe that. "Absolutely hideous" seems too generous somehow.

Ain't life strange. Pretty much automotive perfection to me. Could only be beaten by a Regata or a Sud.

The Aygo was allegedly aimed at the iPhone generation, that, however, was solidly targeted at the British Home Stores generation. Just horrible. If it wasn't beige, and it was a hatch, then maybe it would be OK, but that would be like asking your son to learn to drive in a pair of crimplene slacks.

You've heard of this new fangled fashion thing called "Hipster", right?
Honestly, the lad would be fine with that. He prefers a saloon to a hatch, as does any right thinking gentleman.

You haven't seen the leather Aussie bushman's hat I wear with it either.

Hmmmmm.....
Metallic beige... I like it!
Have to admit I really like the Mk1 Focus, saloon, hatch or estate. I could even pay £2k for that example although the Mazda 3 from last week was even better.

1500 quid tops, to the person who wants to drive a future museum piece (albeit not the design museum).
Shouldn’t snicker though; there are thousands of cars like this and of this vintage still on the roads in NZ. But they are almost exclusively Japanese, not Fords.
