A 17 year old will appreciate a large flat load area for all manner of reasons. Apparently even the Aygo is reasonably accommodating if you leave the rear hatch open...
As in transporting stuff to and from uni accommodation etc of course....

My FIAT Regata had reclining seats for dealing with such requirements.

Volvo S60 or V60. The rear seats fold flat and the passenger seat folds and tucks under the glovebox.
The early 2010-2016ish ones were built on a Ford platform with lots of FoMoCo stamps around to prove it.

My wife had one of the original Merc A classes when they first came out. She never got on with it, and neither did I, so it was only with us for less than a year. But, it's party piece was that you could remove all the seats, front included, except of course the driver's one creating an astonishingly large load area for such a small car.
I used it for work on a couple of occasions when my car was in for servicing or something.

Prefer the 3-box sedan too myself. Bigger boot, and more secure. Rented a few of those Mazda 3s myself over the past 10 or so years; not wrong with them at all. Is rust still an issue with older Mazdas though?

Yeah rust is the biggie. It's killing the 3s and 6s of that vintage, so care is needed when purchasing one. Although I'd probably only be speding £1500 tops, so it can't be expected to last 10 years. Anything Japanese at that budget is likely to be rusty. And Fords. FIATs will be fine though. The Bravo is probably a good choice in this category.

Yes - our Punto despite being scraped to bare metal by its driver (son #1), remains rust free several years after the incident. Astonishing really.

Thinking of spending my unexpected free afternoon on the Juvenile Mobility project, I ran up a comparison quote for the Aygo with Boy2 as policyholder and main driver, with all the rest of us as additionals. I am quite surprised. Total excess is only £200. Now this is for both young drivers on provisional licences. Convert them into newly-qualified full licences and it jumps to more like £800, but that's still at the low end of what I was prepared to swallow. Seems like a value-for-money way to get them the driving experience they need.

Makes a lot of sense. It has worked well for us. Just hope you/he fits in it now.
Only "extra" thing it has cost in 4.5 years is a couple of tyres. Even ones you can pronounce are available at under £50 each.

The advantage of having a car chosen by a driving god who doesn't claim for minor battle scars. Stay away from North Wales chip shops and you'll be fine WDB.

"That" chip shop is in Herne Bay. Never go to Herne Bay. Loose kerbstones there. Protruding ones.

My mistake. England's holding bay county is a long way to go for fish and chips...

...but is, funnily enough, where I’ll have to go to collect this car. My Auntie Alice lived in Herne Bay. Coldest place on earth, in February anyway. And I think I’m going to go for it. I looked at another Aygo today and it fits — or I do. Plenty of room for heads, and just enough for feet... ...and knees. Nobody’s getting in behind, though... ...but that’s not really the point. One pleasant surprise is the seat. Feels really well shaped and delivers a bit of a hug to the ribs, which is not something I’ve previously noticed in a cheap car. I’ve agreed a price with friend’s mum, midway between what the insurers thought it was worth and what dealers are asking for similar ones. Just need to get over there to collect it — and then maybe pop over to Herne Bay before driving it back.
