Freud would have a hayday unpicking all your status anxieties, Humph! I have absolutely no idea why a Mazda 3 would be an embarrassing car to drive.

Oh I'm not anxious about any of that, but it's a bit like asking for a date isn't it? Not much point in asking the ugly ones if there are pretty ones available. I expect you're not allowed to say that now of course. 😉

Good looking car in my eyes, for what it is. Don't see the issue.

If it was a human, it would be called Mildred.

Humph - what's you're favourite C-Segment hatch or saloon, in the sub-£4k budget bracket, sub-15 insurance group, based on looks? Is there something absolutely stunning I'm missing? And If I am, does it matter much for a 17 year old's shed?

Fair enough I suppose. I guess in Reading and Manchester it's prudent to buy things that are highly unlikely to ever to be stolen? 😅 Maybe a three-door saloon is one that has already had something stolen.

No, of course it doesn't matter. If he likes it, then all is well. I admit to a strong dislike of saloons though, especially small ones. What are they for?

Driving to places. Without a fridge.

Driving to places. Without a fridge. ...or a dog, or a bike, or with more than a couple of soft bags. Pointless. T'chah, as "he" might have said.

I'm sure you know bikes go on the outside, and dogs can sit on seats and in footwells quite safely these days. I dont think my lad is ready for his own dog yet, anyway. And they're not compulsory. So saloons are perfectly fine and indeed sometimes preferable for many people, hence their enduring existence, particularly outside the hatchback/SUV/lifestyle fixated UK. My brother in law has a Astra saloon for his family, it's great. They go on ski trips and other adventurous things in it.

Astra saloon? Remember the Belmont? Uglier than a Bulldog chewing a wasp.

Yeah well it isn't one of them, not that I disliked them anyway. His is an Astra "I", I think they call it? Anyway it seems fine to me. He had a Mk2 Focus hatch before that, doesn't seem any worse off for having a saloon now.

The adventures won't be quite as good.

Well, it's a Japanese brand, I think that's what matters to him. He's a bit taken with the JDM scene and just likes Japanese brands. Not sure he's at all bothered that it shares some elements with some Fords.
