Yes, they appeal to two distinct types of fashion victim. 😈 Begs the question as to how one might describe the taste and motivation, of someone who pays a considerable premium, for what is in effect, an EClass estate that appears to have melted? 😉

For what it's worth, insurance on the Aygo when my son was learning was £400 with him as main driver and us as named.
On passing, it went to £900 for the first year and has gradually reduced to under £500 now that he's had nearly four years of claim free motoring. Should drop again next time you'd think.

See that's the thing, a quote for my lad based on him having passed, for an Aygo/C1, is £800. I'd far rather have him in an A3 and pay £1400. I know it's almost double, but it's still only £50 a month more. And in the context of me ditching a £200 a month finance agreement on the Civic and wanting a car to serve as an occasional long trip vehicle for me (and the family) as well as be a car for him, then it makes even more sense to got for an A3 over an Aygo. I'm still gonna be £100ish a month better off, albeit in an older, less powerful car, but one which I will rarely use. I've done 3k miles in the Civic over 18 months.

Makes sense if you're sure you can get along with sharing the two cars between three people. We probably could too at the moment, but everything is paid for so it doesn't feel too urgent to make the compromise.
He's in love with the Jeep too now and wants his own one. Which is fine by me, if he pays for it, in the meanwhile I'm happy to continue funding the Toyota.

Yes, no problem for us. The Mrs barely drives. Shops for everything online. Cannot remember the last time 2 cars were in use at the same time. Genuinely can't remember it happening at all in the last 5/6 years since Mrs A started commuting by train, come to that. If we hit a short term problem, then rent. If circs change longer term, buy another. In the meantime, there's no reason at all to keep losing money on a driveway ornament.

Obscure and mainly uninteresting fact alert !
We calculated that we have each done 1500 fewer miles in the past 12 months by just not going to the gym. 7 mile round trip, averagely 5 times a week. Adds up.

Well, I go/went there to swim. Short of getting in the canal, it's kind of tough to think of alternatives. Not the sorts of roads you'd cycle on after dark either. Narrow, unlit, NSL country roads.
But yes, I know what you mean. My neighbour drives the one mile route to work and back but then drives in an evening to the same gym because he's fed up with being fat.

2 quick points (that you may well already have thought about) Al - Is the A3 big enough? And maybe factor in £50/month towards additional maintenance and repairs on an older vehicle? (Then again, if it’s only going to do 3000 miles/year then it shouldn’t get too worn out!).

The A3 is on a bigger wheelbase so has more passenger room and a bigger boot. The wheelbase on the A3 Mk2 (both 3-door and 5-door variants) and the Golf Mk5/Mk6 were identical. The PQ35 platform was used for a few cars... Audi A3 Mk2 (8P) Audi TT Mk2 (8J)[1] Audi Q3 Mk1 (8U) SEAT León Mk2 (1P) SEAT Toledo Mk3 (5P) SEAT Altea (5P) Škoda Octavia Mk2 (1Z) Škoda Yeti (5L) Volkswagen Touran (1T) Volkswagen Caddy Mk3 (2K) Volkswagen Golf Mk5 (1K) Volkswagen Golf Mk6 (5K) Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 (1K) Volkswagen Scirocco Mk3 (13) Volkswagen Jetta Mk6 (1K) Volkswagen Beetle (A5) (16) Volkswagen Eos (1F) Not all had the same wheelbase. But quite a lot of them did, e.g. apart from the A3 and Golf there is the Leon, Octavia, Yeti, Scirocco and Eos. Of course the 3-door and 5-door variants of the A3 were slightly different - about 3 inches difference in overall length.

The third generation A3 (8V) did have different wheelbase for the 3-door and the 5-door/4-door. Maybe I didn't realise Al was referring to a 3rd generation? Although at the price mentioned probably not. Neighbour is selling a 5-door A3 on a 63 plate and they want nearly £7000 for it privately. Will need to shift it soon I guess because they replaced it with an A5 Sportback (brand new). They might not need the cash but the car isn't needed and depreciating and remains insured.

That's interesting Rob. Yes, I had been talking about the MkII or P8, the 2004-2013 "Sportback" 5 door model. I'm not interested in 3 door models. That's the one in my price range. They look to have more rear passenger space and a bigger boot than a Golf of the same era, hence my assumption they have a slightly longer wheelbase. The Octavia manages this trick also, I'd I'd always assumed the same about them.
Your neighbour's one is out of my league, and I doubt it's the weedy 1.6 MPI petrol either, which is the only variant I'm prepared to insure.
