Sadly I'm a bit "like that" with old Fords, but I get lost with other manufacturers. Golfs and Vauxhalls, in particular.

I think I’ve lost track of all of them, which is probably no great loss.

Well, quite. But keeping track of old car reg numbers is a brilliant device for creating paswords in this day and age. I've got over 40 to choose from in my memory. Just put the make and model down as the "reminder clue".

Correct... My first car reg is used as part of my regular password...
ABC (name of website) 123 X with suitable capitals or punctuation marks...

I got a new photo scanner last week to digitise boxes of old photos. It will be much quicker than a flat bed scanner. And at the end I might sell it... or 'rent' to friends to recover some of the £179.
Anyway found an old photo of the front end of my first car in the first batch.... A Ford Fiesta Mk2 1.1l Popular Plus in Red.

Found another vaguely "interesting" (it isn't really) car with a low insurance group, but only in a specific spec. Subaru Impreza 1.5R, the recent(ish) 5-door hatchback shape. Group 11 Insurance. All other specs and engine sizes have much higher insurance groupings.
This could be a winner.

Group 14 insurance, roughly £1200 a year with my lad as main driver, with a full licence: www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202104040971092In a sceanrio where I've given up the Civic and am only running the Leaf and one other car, to be mainly used by the lad to get to and from school etc, and occasionally by me at weekends, holidays etc, this might make the most sense in terms of finding a balance between affordabilty, insurability, credibility (for him, not me) and practicality.

Golf in drag. You can probably find a similar car with a different badge (pace Avant RIP) for less money.

Nothing wrong with a Golf, whichever badge it comes with, so long as you don’t pay too much.

Golf in drag. You can probably find a similar car with a different badge ( pace Avant RIP) for less money. Well that's the thing. I've been looking for a while, and Golfs are the same money, and same insurance grouping near enough. The A3 is on a bigger wheelbase so has more passenger room and a bigger boot. It's a better family car for longer journeys. The Leon is Golf sized and so smaller than the A3, but is a bit lower insurance wise. And the Octavia, well, it's a Grandad's car in the boy's eyes. SEAT Altea? Mum truck. Golf Plus? Blob. So, to my astonishment, the A3 is probably the best buy for our needs in this group of similar cars. And I say that as someone who, as you know, hates "too much badge". It HAS to be the 1.6 MPI (not FSI) petrol though to get the lowest insurance group. All other variants are considerably higher. The Golf with the 1.6 FSI is in G14 insurance wise, but it's only 12bhp more and a slightly smaller car, so for my preference it'd be an A3 1.6 MPI. Never thought I'd be looking at Audis, but there you go. This specific model seems to be a decent fit for us.

I always thought that the Leon, Golf, Octavia and A3 sat on the same floorpan and therefore wheelbase? The Octavia was larger simply down the larger 'arse' of a boot. Happy to be educated by someone who has looked at this in detail. Longer wheelbase also should mean better ride....
So if it floats your boat.

There are probably engineering subtleties to this that I don’t know about but platform and wheelbase are not the same thing. The five-door A3 has a longer wheelbase than the three. I think the Passat is built on a still-longer version of the same platform. And if they do that, imagine what other refinements and variations are possible.
After six years with 1990s Saabs, I can promise you the 9-3 was very little like the Opel it shared a platform with, whatever the armchair and keyboard experts like to say, so it’s certainly possible to adapt the same basic design into a variety of end products. It’s a long time since I drove a Golf, and I’ve never been in an A3, but I suspect the differences go well beyond the badge.

Yeah, bit like Jeeps and Fiats. Supposed to be the same but very different. 😎

Which raises a question in my fevered mind - if the Passat is on a Golf platform, does that ment the Superb is also? That must be the ultimate stretch if so. How about the A4 and A6? Thinking about it I'm not up to speed with this because I've never really contenanced buying an Aldi.
