Plus whatever contributing to further education ends up costing I suppose. You'll still be the bank of mum and dad throughout that period too.
Everything my son "needs" seems to cost hundreds if not thousands. Better laptops or other electronic devices and so on.

There is that, but trust me the potential costs of supporting University life are way, way lower than our current school fees. For most people, after state school education, I expect it feels like a massive burden. For us, it will come as a relief. I'm willing to bet you don't fork out anyhwere near £2k a month to support him. And we've got 2 of them.

Swap out the Civic for a manual one? Well, hmm. There's a thought. But again it comes down to main dirver insurance for him once the test is passed. There isn't a low insurance manual estate model option.

Ironic really, but my son is the first of my family to have had a state education that anyone can remember. Certainly as far back as our family records show anyway.
He's on the home run in his third year at uni and is being told he's on track for a first all being well. If he achieves that, and of course he might not, it would be the best result for at least three generations. Well, to be fair, his mother got a first but I try not to dwell on that because she was a grammar school girl. 😉
I only just scraped through, but I didn't deserve better, in fact no one was more surprised than me that I got anything. Laziest, most distracted, most feckless youth that I was.

...most feckless youth that I was. Midget against a tree came later, then?

Sell Honda, buy nothing, use free Mini for a few months. There’s a saving to be had!

It's not exactly as roomy for a family of four and a dog and a bit of luggage though, is it? Or a tip run? Or getting a bit of kit from IKEA? Or all that other stuff we're not allowed to do at the moment but hope to in a couple of months time...

Yeah but no but... all the aforementioned activities may be prohibited beyond June, and as per the Holidays thread nobody is having one this year anyway..!
Wouldn’t the Leaf accommodate a family of 4 for a shortish jaunt down the M4 to Wales, Cornwall, etc anyway? Bit of a compromise but c’est la vie at the moment..?

Yeah it's just the dog cage taking up 80% of the boot, but yes easily doable in principle with one charge stop to my Mum's place.

You're going to hate this, but, the answer is there staring at you !
Sell the Leaf, buy a Twingo, pocket difference. Encourage wife to use the Mini for the next 18 months if she doesn't like manuals. Keep Honda for taking the dog to IKEA etc. Use Twingo to teach son, it won't use a lot of fuel, and you'll have a wad of cash back from the Leaf anyway to ease any of that pain.
I don't charge for this stuff you know...

What a daft little car, unless you're single I suppose. Even Sis said she regrets buying it now. Oh well, must run in the family. Further twist, my sister's middle daughter, who owns a Citroen C1 which has been in their family for about 10 years, has announced that it is dead and has sold it for scrap. She also has an old VW camper van, but might well come and pick the Mini up from us and use it herself in the near future. So it might not be in my garage very long after all.
