Yes, sod's law. Although I bet I could get both of them in.

It'd be quite a nice thing to do, if it's not too far gone. I took my Westfield apart and rebuilt it. Very satisfying. You'd easily get a Haynes manual for that Triumph.
And, at the moment, you look the part. Just need some overalls really.

...and a pipe.
Part of our house project is to split the single garage into an extra lobe to the room next to it, and a store / workshop for bikes and things. Modern cars don’t need a garage, and most don’t fit in one anyway.

Yes, we got a Triumph 1300 in about 1976 as a second car. G-suffix so 1968/9. It used a lot of oil and the starter motor sounded like old-fashioned Hollywood effects for the fall of Babylon, but it never failed to start and never let us down. SWMBO still remembers it as one of the most comfortable cars she had.
Could be worth seeing how far gone the 1500 is and what it would cost to restore, Al, if the children are interested in that sort of project. You could get a waterproof cover for the Mini.
Haven't we heard 'that old Merc looks great' somewhere before on here?

Buy the old Triumph, give it a once-over and flog for a profit to a proper collector/restorer..? Dump the Honda because it clearly irks you that you aren’t getting your money’s worth from it. Don’t replace it with an ageing C180 though!
Oh, and planning house updates, don’t forget the solar panelling and the wall-charger for electric vehicles 😄

The charger is already there. The PV panels and water tubes will follow. We have a a huge area of south-facing roof, so it’s daft not to have them already. We probably ought to fix in a wall’s worth of battery storage too.

From my experience, anything more innovative in building design or materials is usually greeted with a sucking of teeth by the builders. They prefer their tried and trusted methods and materials: easier for them and a bigger mark-up from their habitual suppliers 😟

Have you seen a tv programme called "Bangers and Cash" Al?
Features a classic car auction company called Mathewsons. Anyway, they might be the sort of people to contact to get a view on the worth of the Triumph on the open market. If you could buy it for £X and be confident of getting £2X...
Or you could just tell your neighbour about them and let her take the money.

You could get a waterproof cover for the Mini. The Mini is already being kept under an allegedly waterproof cover elsewhere, and still the interior is going mouldy and the convertible fabric roof is going green. That's why sis has asked if it can go in my garage for the rest of the winter.

Cheers, I'll probably send that on to the lady in question. Tempted though I am to offer something for it myself, it might just be that bit too old and weird to be a relatively trouble-free ownership experience, particularly for a new driver. I'd want to do several modernisations to it, such as disc brakes if it has drums, electronic ignition, maybe a fuel injection conversion in addition to the obvious things that would be necesary. Although I wonder if it was already adjusted to run on unleaded, seeing as he was running it until 2006?

If you could make the numbers stack up, it would seem to be the smart move, given all the criteria and preferences you've described, to just try to find a bit of cash to fund a low insurance learner car and keep the other two for now. Joking aside, the Honda would probably go on more or less indefinitely, if you wanted it to, and it's the sort of car that's likely to cover most bases for all time, or at least until ICE engines are obsolete. It's costing something now of course, but if you decided to keep it for ten years, you could probably fairly safely gamble on that being possible without too much grief.
We've had our Qashqai since 2010 and it really has cost us nothing we weren't expecting or that would be considered normal. ( mirrors excepted ) If you've got a good 'un, it might be prudent to just keep it. I know finding more cash right now might feel like indulgence, but in the scheme of things etc...

Yeah I get all that. Our specific circumstance though is that in the autumn, our school fees increase that bit more because the sixth form fees are higher, and also our youngest moves up to the senior school, also incurring a higher fee. So we have a bit of a squeeze on an already stretched cash flow for two years. If I can save a hundred here and there every month, it helps during that period. Essentially we've got 2 years of "austerity" approaching.

Haven't we heard 'that old Merc looks great' somewhere before on here? This is why I'm casting my weary eye at Avensises and Accordses.
