But I didn't scratch any wheels in the process.... They remained pristine.

Are you mulling over replacing the Merc with an X2?

ooooh really... The X2 looks like a nice car. Not too sitty uppy, just slide in height. Similar to my 2003 Subaru Forester. Except it's a BMW and therefore vile in most regards.

Oh I dunno, I've had BMWs in the past and they were really very nice things to use. A 525i I had back in the dark ages was one of my all time favourite cars.
Edit - I mean, they're not as good as Mercs of course, obviously, but I thought it was was best to avoid any confusion.

Whilst I consider driving an E-Class to be a privilege I have never really felt great desire to own a BMW. The Ultimate Driving Machine has backfired for me; I just don't like the impression it gives. However, I am finding that other Mercedes models are looking rather 'flash' and 'blingy' and not really to my taste. Recent BMWs and Audis are similar. The X2 has a certain smoothness to it that appeals; not too angular, what appears to be a long wheelbase and less in yer face than the equivalent models from other prestige manufacturers.
That said, the day I buy a new one will be known as the day hell froze over.

I'm a bit more in favour of an E over a 5, but might be more inclined to a 3 than a C. I'll leave the Audis to the "others" though thanks ( and yes I've had a couple of those too )

‘Fraid the current E leaves me unimpressed, whereas the current 5 is fabulous. But I have a big estate that I like and isn’t about to wear out, so it doesn’t matter much.

Aye indeed, the way things are going ( or not going to be more accurate ) I think I'll be keeping my big estate for some considerable time. Not that I mind, I rather like it.

BMWs in the past are a long way from BMWs of now, which in my limited experience are fairly horrible to operate (as has been pointed out here regarding their horrible iDrive thingy). I'd rather have an Insignia to a current 3 Series.

We had a couple of first gen Insignias on the company fleet. Estates, diesel autos. Actually very nice to sit in and not bad to drive, if a bit noisy in the engine department. Both, sadly, had enough reliability issues to not wish to replace them like for like. Not sure how good or otherwise the new ones are.

The current BMW iDrive controller is easy to use without taking your eyes off the road. On par with the rotary controller I had in the A3 (which was simplified a bit in a refresh) but it also has touch and most things can be done with your voice anyway.
So I can say 'Hey BMW, play Oasis on Spotify' and it will play my Oasis playlist. Just an example. It is probably one of the best systems at the moment - but note I am referring to OS7 and not iDrive 6 or older.

I took the i3 out for fish and chips on Saturday. Closest thing I’ve had to a date for months.
