Just a little thing, but for anyone who habitually uses a roof rack, do you leave it on, or do you remove it when not in use? I leave mine on on pretty much permanently because it's used for bike shifting at least twice a week. But, I guess it would reduce fuel consumption a bit if I took it off in between times. Having said that, it doesn't seem to affect MPG all that much when empty.
Other thing being that I have a pyjamaramic roof thingy, and I fear that one day, I'll cock up the the mounting or removal of the rack with shattering consequences.
What do you do, or not?

Leave it on. Difference in mpg will be small in overall terms won't it.

Carry my luggage inside the car and my bikes behind it. Obviously. đ
And hang the rack in the garage when the bikes are back in the shed. Just tidier that way.

Having luggage inside securely and bikes locked on the outside (rear or top) is common sense isn't? Preferably luggage out of sight.
I liked the idea of a locked boot on the Passat B5 I had which even let you lock the seat backs with the key so they could not be easily dropped from the front. My later hatch/lift-backs loss that but at leat luggage out of sight. Then the Passat CC, Audi A3 and Skoda Superb let you drop the seats from inside the car.
Tough wood I've not had a problem. Not having nearly as much space in the boot soon might be. But I think the A3 had 425 litres so not down too much on that.

Easier for the thieves too I suppose? đ Easier for them not to wreck the car in the course of doing what thieves do. Mine, to give them their due, were pretty tidy. (And the insurance / new bikes situation worked out well, as documented elsewhere.) Might have been very different if they'd been dragging the bikes off a roof carrier.

Ge you know WDB. I'm wondering about remote car theft with keyless start but not entry.

Was that a suggestion you got from the governmentâs new career options website?

You can remote start the car via app, you can unlock the car via the app, none of this means the car can be driven off though. Other checks are made before the controls are unlocked.

Doesnât the roof rack make a whistling noise at high speed when youâre not carrying anything? Thatâd make me take it off.
Wouldnât put one on an electric car; that difference in wind resistance/âfuel economyâ could be more critical?

It's actually remarkably silent until you reach, erm, continental speeds...

See now, here's an example, last night we did a night ride in the forest, so I needed the rack on. Today the car is going nowhere, but tomorrow it'll be doing a 250 mile day out when I don't need the rack on. But, the rack will be used on at least one of Saturday or Sunday and then the car will be "working" again on Monday and Tuesday. If I keep removing and refitting the rack each time to suit, it'd be on and off more than a particularly successful whore's drawers !

A lift in your garage could be one solution. If you use some kind of bike carrier system between the roof bars it can be lifted and dropped as a single unit in seconds. I've got one for our roofbox, the roof bars are left attached to the box. Could be a problem for WdB, for the rest of us no problem.

To be fair, it's a couple of minutes job to mount or remove. 4 clamps to tighten or loosen and that's it. It more about the CBA factor really !

Doesnât the roof rack make a whistling noise...? No, thatâll be Humphâs dwarf road crew in the back.
