Yes, it's car shopping time again, my favourite hobby! This time, I'm spending someone else's money. My Mum's FIAT 500L is being an absolute pain in the aristotle, so she's looking for a replacement. Her big wants are a big boot, lots of rear legroom, and a high driving position. But in as compact a size as possible. Also she lives down a sloping, 1/4 mile unmade lane, in a rural area which gets lots of rain and sometimes freezes solid. So this screams small MPV/SUV of course, and 4x4 would be a distinct plus. Her budget is £10k. I am desperately trying to persuade her that it's not 1978 any more, and in fact a Skoda Yeti would be the ultimate answer to the puzzle. Thusly: www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202007151277874She's been driving diesels for a very long time now, but I'm trying to persuade her away from that as I think petrol a better bet at the moment. I'd love to see her in a Honda or Toyota, but a CRV is too big, an HRV doesn't have the big enough boot, and RAV4s are also a bit big and expensive. We want to get something as near new as possible. It'll be interesting to see what she ends up with - probably another diesel FIAT 500L I expect...

For what it's worth, my father in law ( 84 ) bought one of the new Suzuki Ignisssss back in 2017 for similar usage. Ex-Demo car with all the twiddly bits for a fiver under ten grand. He and his wife just love it. Easy to drive, easy on the eye, cheap to run and the back seats are clever. They slide back and forth to give a small boot/ large rear passenger area or big boot/small rear passenger option.
Might be worth a look?

If the back seats do a really good space making trick, then yes Ignis is maybe a good idea. Thanks. I think a Panda will be too small though and not high enough. She also needs something she can drive with confidence on the motorway, so ideally I don't want her to go THAT small.
She genuinely does need to carry large, and dirty, loads. And a dog. And a very large bloke (step father, big burly 6'2" geezer), who will also regularly drive it. Panda etc will just be too small for his frame.
These are proper country, not city folk.

I'm fairly happy not to push the issue because there's a question mark over rust with them, and they live in a large puddle of mud where it rains enough to take your scalp off.

I would also say I'm really keen she gets the most reliable and most easily maintained vehicle possible, their house is quite remote and the local independent garage is often deployed - main dealers are distant and sparse, and have poor reputations in general. Particularly the awful FIAT dealer in their region. I have no idea why she has kept on buying FIATS (2 Multiplas and a 500L now) when she moans like mad about the local sealer being a charlatan.
A Ford C-Max or B-Max is also high up my list of recommendations.

Post 2014 Dusters don't have the rust issue. If she could stretch to a 2019 onwards model, they are supposed to be very good. I know someone who may well...😉

Would be a pretty hard call between that and the Yeti were it me. Would need extensive mulling over.
She has the links. I await the excited email with the announcement that she's got another 500L.

I didn't know those existed, but again a bit on the small side really. She will often have a friend in the back seat, and be transporting lots of plants (for example) and the dog at the same time.

Have also proposed a Berlingo on the grounds of the enormously practical load area, and the lack of a boot lip. I'm sure Brompteroony will approve.

Well, that might work, clearly from past models chosen, she has no aesthetic conscience... 😉
