If you can hang on a few months Focus Active estates will come into budget.

Mum is a very active and spritely 73 btw, and a very capable driver still. No need to go to Honda Jazz size yet. She needs something which lets her keep her lifestyle and do the things she loves most - a tiny car will just cramp her style and there's no real need to fully downsize yet.

Jeep Renegade 1.4 petrol. Pal has one, works well, no trouble with it, easy to find in budget.

Hmm, interesting. Not considered those. Would be reliant on the local FIAT dealers again though of course, it's a FIAT 500X in a different body.

Just an extra wee thought here, Mum has a derelict stone barn on her property, which she is about to start to turn in to a new (final) home for herself. So, although of course the majority of the work will be undertaken by builders and trades, there will be lots of things to fetch and carry in terms of furnishings and all that kind of jazz, and no doubt some building and garden materials. So maybe the Berlingo is actually the canny choice here. www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202008072191378

I think even you must have caught the drift that we're in the realms of practicality, not fashion, here. There's a BRG MG B in the garage for high days and holidays.

What are they going to do on the high days and holidays ? Take a couple of deck chairs and sit in front of open garage doors watching the oil ouse out of hardened cork gaskets.
Nice toy to have if it's a runner.
I'd buy a plumber or spark's van for humping stuff up and down unmade roads. Car suspension isn't really setup for that kind of abuse and builder's vans are usually beyond knackered when they offload. Bit of generalisation but you get what I mean.

Why not just get a cheap van and use the MG for the rest of the time?
How many passengers will she have?

Well they have a Navara for the really heavy work - so there's no need for another fully commercial vehicle. But something she can pick up some second hand furniture in, chairs and that sort of thing, is what we're talking about here.
They often have two friends in the back, old folks so ease of access is a selling point. Sliding doors on the Berlingo are useful here.
The old shape Peugeot 3008 is a thought, very flexible and practical boot (false floor, she likes that in the 500L, Range Rover style tailgate) and loads of passenger room. Essentially what she would ideally like is another Multipla - but they're all too old now. Perhaps the 3008 is the nearest thing, except maybe a Honda FRV.

No it's still there. Step father is a bit of a car hoarder. He has a Navara, the Rangie, the MG B, a Morris Minor and a Wolsely 1500. None of which are any use to my Mum, she wants her own car to suit her own requirements.

I think this one is going to depend on where the dealers are. A Suzuki Vitara sounds ideal - tough and reliable, and can be had with 4wd - but less so if the nearest dealer is miles away. Does mum have an idea of which dealer are convenient, or is there a good independent nearby?

Yes it's a consideration I've highlighted before. There's a Suzuki dealer 6 miles from Mum's house. This might well be a clinching factor. SX4 S-Cross ( what a dreadful name) would suit I think: www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202009023236126?atmobcid=soc3Oh wait hang on, it's the same dealership as FIAT - the one she's unhappy with and wants to avoid if possible. Wasn't there some tie up with Suzuki and FIAT, producing the FIAT Seidici and the original Suzuki SX4 in a factory in Hungary?
