Wondering what else you’d put on a swan sandwich? I mean, beef is easy, mustard or horseradish both work. Pork would get apple sauce I guess, fish fingers would have ketchup naturally, chicken with a bit of leftover cold stuffing I suppose, bacon with lettuce and tomato, but what goes with swan? 🤔

I know a few of you have lived/visited in/around Florence and Pisa. Other than the obvious tourist locations anything must see or do for a family of four, open to any suggestions, we may split up if there's a big list.
We'll be based in Lucca.

I got a hydrofoil from somewhere near Sorrento to Capri about 20 years ago. It stank and make me travel sick. I did that crossing with my parents in 1981. Very rough, probably the aroma from that crossing you were still experiencing. I did it in 1977 also with my parents. I remember my father explaining how it worked. It must have been a smooth day as I don't recall much about the crossing other than it was fast for a boat and feeling it rise as speed picked up was fun. Mother wanted to meet Gracie (Stans)Field but she wasn't home. Surprising that really...

Can you still visit the Carrara marble quarry? Did that in 1974. www.carraramarbletour.it/ Torre de Lago - home of Puccini, with concerts during the summer. Think there are some free public beaches immediately south of there as well.

San Gimignano (St Jimmy’s) is a treat to visit and of course Sienna. Firenze for a bit of culture. Lucca itself is very pleasant. There will be wine.

What happened to the catamarans that used to ply the Dover-Calais route? Not quite as fast as the hovercraft but a little more civilised.
The Hong Kong to Macau jetfoil has alas now been replaced by a huge bridge…. Ditto Copenhagen-Malmo. Progress eh?

We went on one from Folkestone to either Calais or Boulogne around 2000. Noisy and uncomfortable. Seafrance ferry was altogether more amenable.

Who the hell wants to go on something wobbly and stinky when you could drive over a bridge.

We're off to Skye for the Western Isles ferry in just over a week. I'm contemplating using Mallaig to Armadale ferry as it cuts out a ton of road miles. The turntable ferry from Khylrea to Glenelg is worth a visit too.

Does the mileage fuel saving match the cost of the ferry, out of interest?

Who the hell wants to go on something wobbly and stinky when you could drive over a bridge. Time for new glasses, I read that as wobbly and sinky. Thanks for the suggestions so far, for my summer trip, if anything else comes to mind please add.

I read it as sinky too. Not just you. I think it was the context, as in a small boat.

Does the mileage fuel saving match the cost of the ferry, out of interest? Single fare is £18.60 for car and 2 pax. More than fuel but not massively so and it breaks up the journey.

The inter-island ferries are the star of the BBC detective drama Shetland. (The recent series didn’t really work, partly because of an awkward new human protagonist, but mainly because the ferries didn’t appear enough.) Stinky or not (though ideally not sinky) they’re on my list of outlying features of Britain and Ireland I’d like to experience.
